Do you think you know what a person is like in real by what they post?

people just read comments and words wrongly on forums. A lot of the time the way some one thinks something is meant is completely different to how it was meant when posted.

Some folks will hide behind the anonymity of a screen name, but I think on most 'tech' type forums, what you see is what you get. (what those of us who remember the birth of the GUI abbreviated to WYSIWYG).

I think it generally goes that if someone is persistently rude or opinionated in their posting, then they are probably pretty much the same IRL.

By the same token, if someone comes over as a nice guy in his forum persona, then there's a fair chance that that's the sort of guy he is.

I've met a few people from here, they were all quite genuine. I'm sure some people put on a persona but I've not encountered it.

I'd agree with Telescopi/Werewolf here. :p I'd guess that most of the people who'd want to go to a meet will generally not be attempting to project any sort of persona though so that might be a bit of a self-fulfilling prophesy. Or to put it another way, the people who wish to appear as something else online are probably not all that likely to want to go to a meet where their deception might be exposed, quite possibly they would be more comfortable in their 'virtual' world.

I've been to one meet so far and found everyone to be a bunch of really nice guys and girls, all very much in keeping with what their posting style would have suggested.

Everybody thinks they can tell what somebody is like in RL by what they post - we all stereotype people and build up a picture of them simply by words they type on the internet.

Usually, though, when we then meet them at meets or something they turn out to be utterly different to what we expected.

You mean you ARE Mr. Personality?? :p

I agree with what was said earlier in that those who would goto a meet are generally as they post online. I dont think ive met anyone that I was suprised about how they acted in RL compared to online

Easy.

Ah, a drink driver who likes torturing. Awesome.

Do you think Yantorsen runs around answering every question anyone within a 1 mile radius asks, and buts into every conversation saying "+1!!" :p

I wonder if Gilly runs around slapping restraining orders on people and banning them from things in real life as well :D

And Gibbo always starts every conversations with everyone with "Hi there..."

I reckon Gibbo really does do that :p

Having been to many meets I have discovered that the preconceptions I have about most people based on what they post on the internet isn't a very good indication of what they will be like in real life.

I have met people who I thought were complete losers on the internet only to find that they are awesome in person. The opposite is true too. Some people you think are pretty cool on the internet can turn out to be complete douches although I haven't experienced this as much.

<3 you all.

On line I come accross as erudite, ruggedly handsome, successfull and charming but IRL I live with my parents, stutter, am addicted to cough medicine and cut myself because the bigger boys make me eat worms.
