Hi all :)

Just looking through the prices of the 4850 gfx cards and the 4870 gfx cards, is it me or have the prices gone up?
When i bought my 4850 gfx card it cost 111 pounds but now there more expensive, especially the 4870.
Is it me or have they increased in price?

It's the US dollar and everything else going down.

Here in Canada, eveything went up like 20% in price in a couple of days, it's going to increase even more.

Q9550 was CDN$340 now it's hovering around CDN$410 and going up. It's expected to hit CDN$440-450 next week, some say. E8500 was $205 now it's $255. It's said to hit around $270 next level if this continues.

How does American currency affect us English?

Everything's traded in $$$ in the computer industry. As OcUK sell in £££, there has to be a conversion at some point.

And given the state of the economy, you don't get as many £££ for your $$$ as you used to. :(

I have just ordered through work for 4 dual xeon systems.. The price is approximately £300 more per machine than the cost price 2/3 weeks ago...

Strange because Ram prices are continuing to drop, it's more likely that it's a handy excuse to raise prices.

correct, half the hardware if not more is all made in taiwan/china/japan and they deal with thier own currency and dollar rate doesnt effect them.

only explanation of ocuks price hike could be because they order thier bits from american dealers. many other retailers are showing prices dropping as they always do on pc hardware.

Hi there

Thats because we manage to buy RAM at lower than ever prices which basically factored out the weakening pound. However our re-stock price on memory is a good 15% higher than it is now all down to the weak pound. Were just holding prices down on RAM in hope by the time we come too restock the pound would have strengthened.

However due to our very aggressive memory pricing we have seen sales more than double this week clearly saying our pricing is good just means we may run out rather soon and having to re-buy with this exchange rate will push our RAM prices up.

Hi there

Whether you buy from Taiwan, China or America its all purchased in US dollars, it does not matter if its from America or China its still purchased in dollars.

You saying other stores have not increased pricing but infact dropped prices yet on graphics cards they seem to have increased everywhere, so you telling me you can still find GTX 280 for £205+VAT, 4870 X2's for £279+VAT etc. as thats how much we were selling them for around 4-6 weeks ago as were competitors. Have these gone even lower elsewhere?
Intel Q6600 about 4 weeks were going for around £95+VAT yet now everywhere has gone up, so you can still find places this cheap?

Everywhere I look those competitors have increased pricing, do you know of competitors who have not then, if so email me and I shall buy all their stock up as it will be cheaper than buying direct.

So once again yes the exchange rate has a huge effect on prices in the UK for everyone as most people have commented in this thread.

Yes some things have dropped such as monitors, memory etc. but in general prices on CPU's, motherboards and graphics have gone up and those are the core products that go into building a PC and as they are of higher value rate changes show mostly in them.

That's exactly what I have been saying for the last two weeks. If you want to buy, buy now before re-stcking puts prices up.

The dollor/sterling rate has dropped 10% in the last week and 16% since it's peak on 27th September.

Everything when it re-stocks will be 16% more than a month ago.

Sad fact but true.

not all companies deal in dollars, in europe qimonda the memory makers deal in euros and although the top end gfx cards are going up in price the mid range and low end cards are dropping in price. how is it the exchange rate only effects high end hardware and not the low end stuff?

With the high-end parts, there's much lower yields and much less demand. With the lower end, they (AMD, nVidia) probably get cheaper rates from the factories as they keep selling, so they order bigger production runs each time. Also, everything below the high-end seems to fluctuate much faster/frequently as they do love putting out new cards. The 8800GTX was pretty dear for a long time.

Hi there

Quite simple really there is more margin to begin with on lower end and mainstream components and as they are of much lower value the rate has little effect.

As already mentioned on lower-end parts manufacturers can just increase production runs to lower cost.

In regards to euros well the pound is ever weaker against the euro so buying in euros is not always particular great either.

I am so glad I finished building my new PC 2-3 weeks ago. Looking around at the constantly increasing prices on the parts I bought is giving me quite a sense of relief.

Do you think the pound will strengthen in say 6 weeks time as my annual trip up the A50 is approaching!

Xmas is in 6 weeks. Maybe if we all buy loads of aftershave and socks we can give the economy a cash enema, and gfx cards will come down.
