so i currently have 4X1GB of geil ULL - its ok but is pretty unstable using ll four sticks

looking to go to the corsair dominator 2X2gb kit with the airflow fan

will it give me any benefit other than more overclocking headroom?

what are your thoughts?

how do you find dominator memory?

Do you know what the cause of the instability running 4x1gb is on your system. If the sticks are overheating then a fan positioned to direct air over them would be sufficient. If heat isn't the problem then look at upping the NB voltage if you haven't already done so. 4 sticks are much more stressful than 2..

Also did you check the sticks in memtest to see that none of them have errors, which may be giving you instability.

If you must upgrade then I would go ahead with the dominators.

There is very little point overclocking RAM on a DDR2 platform... the performance gains are neglidgeable. Just find some RAM with decent timings that will run 1:1 with your CPU and your set.

Not to mention that extra voltage has a far bigger impact on life span on RAM than it does on most CPUs.

sorry - last nights post was an 'in from the pub' post
let me explain in more detail

my current 4X1gb sticks run fine
but i have to volt up the NB and keep the timings loose

its ok but it does get very hot [the ram]

im moving to watercooling soon [just cpu in one loop] but i have to wait for my new case to arrive

i currently have my q6600 at 3.3GHz and know it will push further on water as temps are good on air

ideally i would like any 2X2GB kit so i could roll back NB volts a bit

i looked at the 800MHz 2X2GB kit and see it as a 'sidegrade'

so thats why i asked about the dominator

1. will it allow me to overclock further

2. does it stay cool with those fancy heatspreaders or do you need the fan [ive heard its noisy]

im not to fussed about the price as ive just sold some stuff on the MM

With the OC you have and with that CPU, CAS4 PC6400 would be a good choice. If you want the most extreme memory OC, then the Dominator PC8500 is the better choice. And, both our DHX and Dominator series memory runs very cool.

unless you are going past 3.6ghz then the GeIL RAM is good.. mine used to do up to around 450FSB which is good for 4ghz... only reason to get faster is if you want to bench at high FSB

i have to say
got them in the system
put them at stock settings

then put my cpu to 425 X 8 to get it up to 1020

booted up fine and primed/ benched etc - my old geil struggled

i had the advantage of dropping the nb volts a bit as it was used to running 1GBx4

basically im dead happy
and it doesnt need the cooler as my case drags enough air across it

i see potential for some daft overclocks when i move to water next week!

i tested it
put it on my fan controller and it seemed ok whilst on low
half way or more it was quite noticable

i tried it on a spare fan header on my motherboard and it was quite loud

like i said - my case is quite well ventilated so the ram is only warm to the touch when i was testing my overclock with prime95 blend

the 'fingers' at the top of the memory come across the path of my cpu cooler fan too which gives them enough airflow - the dominator module seemed to only restrict the airflow path of my cpu cooler

i guess they may get a bit hotter when i move to water as there will be no fan next to them - but like i said - temps are good without it
