Well, my Nvidia 7900GS is getting a bit old. There's some good games coming out soon so it's best to upgrade.

I've never been one to spend much on GFX cards so £100 - £130 is about all i'm willing to spend!

My monitor is a CRT. A 21" EIZO F77S.

So what's the latest and greatest?

Nvidia are perfect alternatives....I just looked at the prices, get the 4850 the cheapest 8800GT 512 is £89 and is a fair bit from the performance the 4850 offers.

The 9800GTX + is out of your price range, and is still only just on par with the 4850. ATI is the daddy for your price range :)

The only game I have had issues with is crysis where I experience hell of a lot of flickering textures, thats sorted by running in windowed mode for 8fps less :(. Other than that mine is fine.

Also Ticktock you have to remember a lot more 4800 series cards have been sold than GTX200 series. So of course more problems are going to be reported with ATI cards

You can get a 1Gb version delivered for £130, though you`ll have to look ;)

He will see no performance benefits really from a 1Gb version, so seems kinda pointless to me.

1440 or less = no improvement at all really

1680 = really small improvement (1-2%)

1920 = Noticeable improvements

I might be wrong though

But, for an extra £13? No brainer if you ask me .... and we all don`t just game on our PCs ;)

He man, Google, you`ll see that there are benefits from an extra ½ gid of ram on a 4850. Some gaff did a test on a card with 2Gb of RAM and folk took it as gospel. Seems that between 512Mb and 1Gb, there were noticable performance hits, but in between 1Gb and 2Gb, not as such ;)

And if you CF later on? You`ll appreciate the 1Gb version :)

Thats a 12% increase in price for something that will not show any difference to this person. Also I didn't state there was no benefits for having an extra 512Mb of RAM, I stated they were insignificant for what Vanilla is using his PC for and the resolutions used. Its not like an extra £13 on top of £300 ;)

I am intrigued to see benchmarks showing a noticeable performance boost at 1680 x 1050, and any applications or wtv that might make use of it.

Why waste money on something unnecessary?

My 512Mb 4850's run fine in crossfire, I'm sure I would have seen a nice performance boost if they were 1gig and am gutted I didn't wait til the 1gig's were released.

Anyway Vanilla it will depend on your preference, 1gig is definitely better overall. But I'd highly recommend the extra money if you intend on gaming at 1900 x 1200, but not convinced on paying the extra for 1680 x 1050. Any less than that and its absolutely pointless

Hey man, you really should read the Op. He said around £130, my 1Gb option is delivered for that, it`s simple really. Why bring the price thingy into it? He said what he wanted to pay. :)

And ... benchmarks, benchmarks .... :rolleyes: Hey, games with higher AA and AF will benefit from higher RAM regardless of the res

Apps:

Photoshop, Vue D`esprit, Terragen ... need I go on, I use all of them and really appreciate the extra RAM. I don`t need a benchmark or a Google search to tell me that .... I live thru experience ;)

Oh, and the option to CF at a later date? It`s a deffo no brainer that 2 x 1Gb cards CF better than 2 x ½Gb cards CF better. Ask around ;)
