Love my PS3... hate the controllers!

Hey,

I've had a launch day PS3 for ages and it's a damn nice bit of kit, but why are the controllers so CRAP. The grotesque 15 year old design sits in your hands like a small turd, and the L2/R2 buttons are just horribly positioned (even with add-on triggers). The 360 pad is miles better and so much easier to use.

So I'm wondering if there are any decent third party controllers out there that are any good?

I want one of these!!

Cheers,

Suman

I've got no problems with the DS3 either - think it's a fine controller.

I used to have a 360 & don't think their pads were any better.

I am surprised nobody has yet brought out a PS3 pad in the style of the Xbox 360 pad. I think there would be a lot of demand for it.

I have used an adapter to use my Xbox (not 360) pad on a PS2 before, and it makes games like GT much nicer to play - but it isn't a substitute for a proper Xbox (style) pad because it didn't give analogue triggers, so I still had to use the buttons for accelerate and brake etc.

isn't the controller pictured in the OP the one that was meant to ship with the ps3, i.e an official design, that was later resinded due to it's unpopularity

That said I hate the PS controllers, one of my main dislikes stopping me getting a ps3

I also feel the ds3 is outdated. The triggers are shocking and the left analogue is in the wrong place imo

It's one of the main things that is stopping me getting a PS3. My hands hurt after playing with a PS3 controller for more than 5 minutes :(

The fact is that Sony are still using a design that originally comprised of analogue sticks being bolted as an afterthought onto a very good controller in the form of the original PS pad.

While it may be iconic, it doesn't mean it's the best solution anymore.

i suspect MS developers did this:

got their game/peripheral testers to play around with controllers for hours and hours.

Coz ps3 controller is not bad but after 3 or 4 hours? NO - hands are stiff etc.

360 controllers doesnt seem to have this problem...its much more comfortable.

Shame their actual console build doesnt match up to the PS3 quality feel.

I saw a diagram somewhere that showed that concept PS3 controller design to be pretty ergonomic and comfortable in the end; Sony only scrapped it because of all the 'lol boomerang' comments. The fact that they went back to a decade-old design that pales in comparison to the competition is both hilarious and sad. The add-on keyboard recently shown once again proves that Sony simply has no idea which direction to take with their controllers.

I actually prefer the DS3 over the 360 pad, however i'm going to put this down to it being what i'm used to. I don't own a 360 and i rarely use my USB pad on my PC so when i do hold one it feels strange, also i have tiny stubby hands that lend themselves to the much smaller DS3 design.

I actually think both designs kinda suck tho, bring back the gamecube controller!

I don't agree, as much as I like the GC controller the 360 controller is pretty much perfect, it sits perfectly in my hands and never gets uncomfortable, even after hours of use. They are perfectly weighted too.

GC contollers are close, but feel a bit small and light after getting used to the 360 controller.

That being the reason i loved it. As i say i have rather small hands, the 360 pad is just too plain big for me, the game cube controller is pretty much a smaller version in terms of ergonomic design so it's perfect.

I remember the old HUGE xbox controller, i couldn't even get my hands around that.

360 controller is great, much better than the PS3 controller especially for FPS.

I also liked the original Xbox controller, that was the first controller I played a console FPS on that felt good to control, anyone remember Half Life on PS2? PAINFUL.
