'I was refused new job because of my tattoo'

Bloody silly, what did he expect.

He has a right to put whatever tats he wants on his body, but he should expect to bear the consequences in a less than utopian world :)

Whoa, that was deep :p

Ant

Tattoos are more than welcome where I work, people have piercings, tattoos, as long as they wear a company t-shirt and no extravagant hats then it's all good. One of the reasons I like the place.

Obviously obscene and abusive tattoos wouldn't be quite so welcome :D

I don't believe that people who get tattoos or piercings on areas of their body that can't be covered don't think of the consequences first. If you want to have a tattoo on your face, then you have to accept that you may not get a job in customer services as it doesn't give the best first impression to a customer unless you work in a music store.

Virgin have to think of their image, to a company with so many different branches, image really is everything. A lot of people would be intimidated by a person with a tattoo on their face, regardless of what the "yay for body mods" lot say, and that probably isn't what Virgin are going for with their staff.

yeah, but that would make a much bigger story than just a tatoo, it would probably involve the police just for not employing because they're E.G> black/muslim ect.

and thats different to saying you have a tottoo, you dont have the job...... really not the same

Oh Dear.

You do realise the police themselves specify that on some jobs you must be black to apply right?

if someone is intimidated by another person with a tattoo then they got issues with themselves not the person with the tattoo. By refusing to hire someone who looks a little different from the average sheep/drone its just setting a bad example. I can understand it if the image of the employee matters a lot e.g. advertising agency model.

next thing you know it'll be the ginger kids being refused work.... swathes of them loitering at the dole centres...wandering the streets... how will the freaks survive? i guess theres always circus sideshows...

"But out-of-work Tom was shocked to find out he cannot work at Stoke station because of the tribal markings above his right eye."

what an idiot :D

Well looks like he is going to stay out of work with that on his boat race.

Hope they refuse him benefits as he has made him self unemployable .

Get your head out of your arse!

I just got a tattoo on the back of my neck, i hope any interviewers i face dont take that into consediration ah well its there now and aint goin nowhere

a) I haven't ready any of the thread past the OP

b) I'm what most people would describe as 'heavily' tattooed.

That man had a tattoo on his FACE, and has no right to be surprised that no one wants to employ him. I'm completely against any unreasonable discrimination against tattooed folk, but not wanting to employ someone with a tribal tattoo around his eye is about as far from unreasonable as you can get.

I've got tattoos on my torso, both arms and one leg, and I wouldn't give him a job either.

Get your head out of your arse!

Rubbish. Anyone with half a brain knows that getting a tattoo on your face is a pretty ****ing big deal, and should never be done unless you're 100% certain you're either in a field where it doesn't matter (which are rare) or are so exceptionally good at whatever it is you do that it doesn't matter (which is rarer still)

I have quite a few friends with facial tattoos, including one who's an infant school teacher and goes by the name "Spider" due to the intricate spider-web designs he has on his face. Like you say though, he is a very good teacher and very good at his job but so is the guy in the posted article. It's just the jobs that differ, and his having a rather small tribal design on his right eyebrow area should not negate him getting a job as a security guard! Especially as one of the security guards that is already employed on Stoke station has his hands covered in "prison style" tattoos!

Plus, don't forget that I actually know the guy in the article in real-life.

rather small, my backside.

Have you ever met the guy? Trust me, compared to some of the facial designs you can get his is small! Seriously, after a few minutes of talking to him you don't even notice it anymore.

LOL @ some of the comments at the link:

Isn't it illegal for tattooists for tattoo the face now?

Any reasonable person would have realised that having a tattoo on the face would make it extremely difficult to get a job, as nice as the bloke is, it was forseeable that this would happen. If we allow one case to go through where will it end. WHERE WILL IT END?

Well that's probably because your a weirdo and you're use to talking to people with faces mutilated by piercings, funny colour hair, poor excuses for tattoos and a bad dress sense... :p

Why, what makes you make such a bizarre claim? I think you'll find that you're quite wrong with your assumptions there!

Theres a bloke in his 60s who comes into Central Outpatients once a week using 2 walking sticks and what skin you can see is totally covered in tats.
So basically his face, neck, ears, eyebrows, lips, hands - everything.
I've only said a few words to him to him but would love to know his employment history.
I would also think the rest of his body is the same.
He is a nice bloke but its quite funny seeing a 10 foot gap all around him because people just step out of his way.

Some pretty pathetic replys in here to be fair.... With people bitching about a damn tattoo like that, no wonder the BBC is getting so many complaints, its the single minded people from here!

If somone showed me his picture and said what job do you think he does, id say security guard right away, i was in tesco extra the other day, the two security guards there where skinny, young, and wearing turburns (no im not being racist) now who would you rarther put infront of a group of chavs? the skinny guys they you could snap if you pushed them, or the big hard guy with a tattoo....

It's called SECURITY for a reason, id much rarther have this guy looking over my shop, not somone that would get beaten by the first shoplifter
