1 red light on the 360 and the battle begins with "Max"...

Today I turned n the 360 to see a single red light light smiling back at me. I jumped onto the internet to see what this meant and with the code (E74) found it that it may be the AV cable or some ship. I tried a cable which I knew worked from a mate and confirmed it is indeed the chip.

I called Microsoft and had the throat stabbing pleasure of speaking to Max, Microsofts automatic voice guy who speaks annoyingly (like a stereotypical Californian cartoon surfer). After fighting past him I got a real person to speak to and they said that the warranty is only extended to 3 years for the RROD, nothing else. Therefore I was told I have to pay £60 to get it fixed, which I don't have.

Has anyone else had this thrown at them? I think it's terrible that the most unreliable console on the market only extended it's warranty to one single fault from the long list that exists? Also, has anyone managed to get it done free if they've had a fault like this? This warranty farce seems very unfair.

Its the main fault though. The other faults are well within industry standards and if you bought any other console and it failed you would just have to put up with it. Its not a warranty farce at all, the fault that is above the industry average is covered.

You have two options, lie or take out an extended warranty for £25 and then phone them back in a few days.

God knows why you didn't just lie in the first place. Surely you knew the 3 year warranty was only for 3 reds?

This is the reason I've always banged on to friends about taking out the service plan for £25 a year. They always dismiss it and then after 18 months when the console drive packs up they moan about having to pay £60.

On both my consoles now that service plan has paid for itself.

Yep. £25 a year for a premium/pro. My launch console has needed two drives in it's lifetime. My spare now has developed the fault as well.

I dont put up with it marking my discs or giving me dirty disc errors. I paid for the plan, it goes straight back for replacement.

I honestly didn't know that the warranty was extended for RROD only, a mate told me it got extended and we both assumed it meant for all breakdown. Curse my naivety to think MS would do that. I can't exactly lie either, it'll just get there for them to only see one red light and I'll be caught out. I'll guess I'll just have to do without it for a few months (yes, I'm that skint at the moment). Maybe get a bit more practice in on the guitar or take up jogging. At least I had a good few properties bought on fable 2, I'll came back to some random fake cash.

Of course you can lie, they can't prove a thing. My nephews had the same code you are getting and we returned it by saying it had 3 reds. 10 days later his console was home repaired and with a courtesy months live.

If the USB cover on mine breaks I'd say it had 3 reds ;)

You're own fault for presuming really. To be fair though, it happens you know?

Make it RROD, take a picture of it doing thus (incase they say it's fine), then send it back.

I might just leave this til tomorrow morning, I just turned it on in some wistful hope it works again and it's now changed itself to 2 red lights! Give it a night and it might change it's mind again, now I know why my mate gives his xbox a females name...

I think more people get this error than the 3 red lights. E 74 should have 3 years warranty too. I myself got the same error. My 360 was less than a year old. I told this to the Asian guy on the other end of the phone. (I could hardly understand a word the guy was saying it was irritating.) He asked no question and I did not even have to prove it was still under warrenty.

Today after giving up on it for a few days I plugged it back in to see if there was any magical difference and now it works fine with no intervention. It's just a case of how long it lasts really, I hope it doesn't break again. That Microsoft phone line is mind destroying.

??? to change console, i.e exhange it for a new one or for warranty cover?

I can't imagine a shop giving you a new console for £23.99 in exchange f an old broken one, if someone does this though could they please confirm it for me!!! I can't imagine this lasting long.

My first 360 died of a weird problem. Wouldn't display any picture after an update, didnt get any red rings just either a blank screen or distorted colour.

Rang them up and they kindly reminded me that my warrenty was out of date, but seeing as i brought the console on release day they replaced it free of charge in good faith.

Also 1 months gold membership. Ive even had mates blag free games from microsoft after getting the RROD. When you call ask to speak to the supervisor and just give them the "this is unacceptable, loyal MS customer" etc etc.

Force it to RROD, or risk it and send it off without the RROD. Some people have got away with it.

Ive been trying since August to do this

If you want to be really sure, wrap it in a towel and leave it switched on, that will give you RROD

Doesnt work either, all toweling it did was get it to work again. Net result is an Xbox which just wont die, it will play fine for about 10-15 mins then I get graphical corruption. People complain that they are loud but you havnt heard anything till you wrap one in a towel and hammer it on COD4 or GTA4.

If it's less than 12months old and screem the retailer down till they got me a replacement.....if it's older make it rrod
