Right, bit of a disaster...

I turned the PC on this afternoon and all was fine, and set it running folding@home. I left it alone to grab some lunch and it turned of the screen as normal. I came back to check, wiggled the mouse to get it to turn the screen input back on, and all was well - for about 20 secs. Suddenly all power died. To be honest, i presumed it was a power cut, but noticed that the screen was still on. The PC then started to turn on again (not under my influence - like a power cut had taken place), at which point, i heard what could best be described as a 'pop' sound, and power died. I quickly tunred off the mains power, and i have a feeling that there was a bit of a funny smell in the air. The thing also tripped the ring main - all of which gives a pretty good indication that the thing has died.

My question really is what should i do? I dont really want to try and turn the PC on again in case its dead and it frys some of the other components. I also do not know how to tell if the rest of the insides will be alright - how likely is it to have taken out some other parts of the PC? The PSU is well within its warranty (only a few months old), so i can RMA. I dont have another PSU to hand, so would have to buy a replacement for testing.

The PSU was a 620w corsair modular supply (the red one!). The PC had a Q6600, a 9800GX2, a couple of disk drives + hard drives and a few extra case fans - nothing too much really. A power meter indicated it was pulling less than half of the PSUs rated wattage under full load, so i doubt it was caused by overloading. When i first bought it it made a strange squeaking noise, but was told by the retailer that if the power rails were stable then i would not be able to get it replaced... shame, because i guess it actually was faulty!

Thanks, any advice would be appreciated.

Set up an RMA with Corsair I guess, if the thing was squeaking when you first got it Corsair probably would have replaced it if you'd consulted them directly.

Also if you have any spares it might be worth giving it a test just to be sure, as well as to double check none of your other components got damaged when it failed!

Sorry, pretty self explanatory advice but it does sound like your diagnosis is correct.

Thanks shash - if i do buy another PSU, is there any risk that damage could be done to that if i plug it in, if, for example, the motherboard is blown?

Just take out everything accept for cpu,, and power it up, then if motherboard seems ok, id put it back together again and boot up.

But id prob just power it up and hope for the best cos corsair psus are top quality so it shouldnt of taken your board out with it.

Weird my Corsair 620 modular pretty much died last week too, it cant boot up the system anymore. New Enermax PSU fitted and its fine.

My HX620 dies a couple of months back too. I just sent it back to Corsair (cost about £25 post) and they sent me a new one. Takes about 10 days.

Hmmm.... Are Corsair PSUs actually less bullet proof than their reputation here would suggest?:eek::mad:

I bought a 520w modular a week or two ago...... !! ;):(:)

Mmmm... beginning to think this too. Ordered a new BeQuiet PSU that should come tomorrow. Hopefully damage wont be too bad. I contacted the reatiler, and they said that they would organise the RMA, but i will not be happy if its gonna cost £25! Thanks for the advice guys - certainly soured my experience with corsair.

Hipers are far worse than Corsair, they are still a dam good PSU if a bit old :)

Search the forum for "hiper explosive" :p

I take it you've had to pick up the tab for this?

Yes, the cost (and responsibility) of sending the item back is down to the customer so they recommend using an insured and traceable courier. You only need to send the main unit itself back (no leads), but even so, it weighs over the 2kg limit so postage is high, especially as you need to send to a place in Europe.

The RMA process is quite good though. You get given a code and you can login to see the status of the RMA. They then send a replacement (complete unit with leads) back to you from the states. They use a fast shipping option and delivery on takes 2-3days.

sounds similar to what happened to me.

Corsair 620W popped and nothing would fire up. fiddled about for ages, tried everything for about 3 days and still done. used spare psu and everything was fine. so obviously the psu was goosed.

Now this sounds like the most stupid solution ever but it worked for me. Honestly!!

Take you psu out and put it in a darkened room with good ventilation. i put mine in the garage for 36 hours.

I then plugged it back into the system and it worked fine!!!! it was a last resort before paying £20 or so to send it back to holland!!! been in my system for 3 months now without a hitch!

3 Corsair PSU's...Hiper aren't the only bad ones :P

Bad comparison to make imo, with the older hipers you were lucky to find one that didn't go pop, whereas it's rare for a corsair to go bang, not forgetting that so far only a handfull have been reported to do so on this site.

LOL good to know about hipers I almost bought one - under good impression after reading few reviews, I did not buy it only because it had many 12v rails instead of one strong (and also bad ripple on +12v under heavy load).

My 520w corsair died a while ago and now my 750w one is making noises :(

Funnily I had a Hiper PSU before this and thats still going :D

Looks like its time to spend the money and get a decent name.

More examples...lol

I have read the hiper explosive thread. So far we can add 4 to the Corsair Go's Pop thread

Just having a bit of fun :P
