Charged 5 times by petrol station

I filled up my car on Monday, but after looking at my bank statement yesterday, I have been charged 5 times (at slightly different amounts) for the transaction.

I phoned up my bank and they say I should go down there with a statement, and the receipt which I thankfully still have, and the petrol station people will check their till roll and refund me. However I know the guys there probably don't speak English too well so I imagine this is going to be a pain in the rear.

Any helpful suggestions you can give me? Anyone ever had this happen? How did you sort it?

Card issuer is first port of call.
If they are no help ring the garages head office or write a letter.

All you can do is go talk to the station, if they don't want to know, your banks fraud dept would be next :)

It was a Maestro debit card....I should probably start using my credit card for these types of things, but it still has a student-sized limit on it so not that practical.

Call your bank back, say you'd like to report it as a fraudulent and unauthorised transaction and get them to investigate & sort it out. It is, after all, what they're paid to do.

Does it take this kind of thing to make them pay attention? I shall definitely do that if the petrol station gives me hassle.

I'm quite surprised a series of transactions like this wouldn't flag something on their security system and block the card. I'd seriously ring them back and report it.

Well what they said was they couldn't do anything about it because "the petrol station now has the money" A strange response, I thought, but since it's a debit card they are right.

BS, report it as fraudulent transactions (which it is) they will sort it out quickly

did they come out your account before?

coincidentally, my sister hadn't had any come out since September, but as of yesterday the Shell garage she used debited everyone for the transactions (3 in her case)

It doesn't matter how you paid them (or rather how they stole it), credit card, debit card, wire transfer, etc, the bank must always reverse the charge in fraudulent cases.

I had a similar experience last year after I filled up at Tesco, my card was charged twice for the same amount. After contacting my bank, Abbey, they confessed it was their fault and the money would go back into my account the next day. I argued with them that as they were only too happy to charge me for making errors such as going over limit or bouncing Direct Debits then I wanted similar recompence, and so asked for £30, after arguing for about 15mins I spoke to a manager (Indian call centre) and he agreed to give me the extra money.

At least one good result in the battle against the banks I guess, Abbey are pretty rubbish in my experience.

Yes, I went up to the station yesterday and they told me they had been having "polling" problems, beginning in September. Now to see if I can find any old bank statements to confirm this.

Call your bank, they should be able to access at least 6 months of back statements and look for any transactions to Shell for you.

Oh for goodness sake. Man up, and go talk to the garage about it.

If that doesn't sort it, contact your bank again.
