tipping posties and milkmen

I don't have a milkman, and my postie is useless.

He tried to deliver a letter to my next door neighbour that was addressed to a person living in a road with the same name as mine, but in Barbados. TWICE!!

It's improved recently, but there's still the occasional neighbourhood mail sorting get together.

Its not as if you are required to tip people. The worst thing is fancy bars and restaurants that just stick a service charge on your bill. So you havent really got much choice.

Any service charge added on to a restaurant bill is discretionary. You can chose whether or not to pay it at your discretion.

We used to have it where I work and I didn't like people not knowing that they could turn down the service charge if they didn't think my service was good enough, so I'd let them know about it. Luckily I wasn't awful so the majority of the time I'd get tipped personally rather than having it go into the service pot :)

I didn't realise this. I'll keep this in mind next time it happens after a less than satisfactory meal.

Everytime a tip is automatically added to the bill we ask for it to be removed. It should be for the customer to decide how much is tipped, not for the restaurant to automatically add the average tip and the staff member to provide an average service because of this.

Postman and bin men get a tin of Quality Street for Christmas at my house. I know they get paid their own wage but they save me the inconvenience of doing it myself. Well deserved in my opinion.

i tip the delivery man of my food and if im in a restraunt and also the odd get one yourself pints to the bar person thats about it for me

does anyone ever tip in McDonalds?

our postie gets tipped, but hes been doing our run for years and hes a good postman.
Puts whatever he can fit through the letterbox, and leaves stuff nextdoor and cards us with the right number etc. Doesnt knock and run off when he has a package, waits a bit etc. Dont have a milkman.
Dont tip takeaway delivery either, as they get an ok wage and free food, and its inevitable they wont be paying tax.
Will never pay a service charge, its insulting, though I would leave a tip if I feel one is deserved, unless its somewhere with a big tip pot, or that I know the management sponges the tips up and uses them for the xmas party, which is at the resteraunt/bar.. and bags most of it as a profit.

Completely agree, and admire your stance and openness. I despise restaurants (around 50% that I visit nowadays) that add on a service charge - particularly when the service is either very good or very bad. I always like to tip anywhere somewhere between 5% and 15%, but will only do so in cash and I always ensure the waiter / waitress is clear that it is a tip for service.

Usually my tip is "Get a proper job you ape! Have a wash as well." :p They dont deserve tips...

The simple OcUK way of looking at things, are you lot all born into money? I know a few friends who worked at mcdonalds when they were students only to go on and earn £35k+ after education

A job is a job, I respect anyone working at mcdonalds simply because they could be on the dole draining the tax I pay

Sorry, what? They save you the inconvenience of what? Delivering you own mail? Disposing of trash? That's what you pay council tax and postage for!!

Or am I confused.

Tips are for when a member of staff goes above and beyond the call of their duty or their job description to make your evening/life/whatever just that little bit more pleasant than it normally is.

Tipping people for just doing their job is utterly ridiculous.

Our postie gets the occasional tip, usually in the form of a herbal substance, to keep his spirits up for the rest of his rounds.

Never had a letter not arrive at this address.... :D
