Can you charge the DS3 controller through the PS3's USB ports when the console is off? If not, why not!!! I don't really want to be playing it while tethered to the console by a short USB cable, but only have one controller which is always iin use if the PS3 is on. What do you guys do to charge yours?

Also, what type of battery is in it? If I charge it without it being fully run down, will it lose capacity?

no. and to answer the second question, because the ports arent powered when the ps3 is in standby.

now, there are a few ways around it.

1) charge it off the pc if its close by
2) by a longer usb cable - 10m can be had for a few quid (literally)
3) buy one of those charging docks that have their own mains power supply. did i just dream them up? not sure lol
4) buy another pad and charge one while your using the other :p

Yea, think I'll have to stick it in the PC until I get a 2nd pad. Do you know if the Xbox 360's USB ports are given power when it's on standby?

Also, do you know the answer to my other question-whether the battery will lose capaccity if it's charged when not fully run down?

Never heard of a sixaxis or DS3 doing this, the memory effect as far as i recall was only really a problem with early Ni-Cad batteries. The sixaxis/ds3 uses a lithium battery that will last years, but Sony has said they will replace dead/poor batteries if required. Im also sure that in the manual somewhere (possibly online one) it gives you instructions on how to replace the battery by yourself.

If a 360 pad's charging when you turn off the console it'll keep power to the port until the pad's charged. Then it'll turn off.

The 360's USB ports are always powered - my USB memory drive flashes away in a sleep mode merrily when the 360 is off. With the PS3, it doesn't light up at all.

Sony are supposed to be released a mains-powered charger. When it's out, I haven't a clue.
