Can shops still take payment from cards without a "chip"?

I've not done it in a little while, but I have done it this year, I imagine they have to have it as a back up facility of some sort.

I believe the little hand held thing's sometimes have the swipe part on them as well...Cause I've seen people trying to use they're pin and it don't work, so they get it swiped instead.

Does that mean that kids cash card would work too? As they have swipeable bits. I remeber when i was younger how i wanted to always use it in the shops rather than have to go to an ATM first :p

A friend of mine has used her card to much the chip doesn't work any more so all stores have to swipe it and get her to sign!

Which is stupid tbh. The whole point of chip and pin is so that you CANNOT forge a signature and need to know the PIN. Supposed to be more secure. Whats the point if you can just kill the chip and claim it broke . . . .

Unlikely because these are usually just cash cards, not debit cards.

As has been said a lot of foreign cards still use signatures. Certainly where I work we accept cards without a chip and can swipe them, but can't swipe cards with a chip.

So if you only have one card and your chip breaks, you'd be happy to go without a card until your new one arrives in the post? :)

yup thou we eask for a 2nd form of ID to verify who the person is. It's not just our american friends it's our asian, australian & new Zeland friends who don't have chips on their cards
