I parked my prelude in my garage for the first time the other day, and noticed a bit of muck on the floor when I reversed it out the next day. It corresponded to the join between the backbox and middle section.

I had a look and the join was very corroded, and actually had a small hole. The join looked like it might clean up and be re-sealed, so i wire-brushed at it. Ahh, it pretty much disintegrated under my robust brushing action!

So i decided to have a look around and see what was available to replace both sections. I decided against going to Honda, as i already had a non-standard manifold/downpipe, and also i had found the part prices/labour rates a bit steep. Not being a completely afraid of a set of spanners, I decided to buy a full cat-back system from America and get it fitted myself. (I did check with my insurance that it would be allowed first!)

Here it is...

I was very worried about noise levels, and didnt want something that would pee off my neighbours and make me go mad on the motorway. So i spoke to a few guys over at Prelude UK and they persuaded me that with the bung in place the noise was fine. I am a little worried about the size of the tailpipe, 4.5 inches!! However, other people have chopped these off, and stuck on less Ricer versions and they look very nice.

My insurance company (Royal Sun alliance) were very happy to add this to my policy and quoted an extra 54 quid if I did it that day, and it would be cheaper when i called up to confirm it had been fitted (they work it out depending on how long is left on the policy).

Lets just hope its not too loud, and the noise bung turns a nice black on its own, otherwise i shall be paiting it with black high temperature paint!!

At least now it'll look like all the other barry'd up Hondas.

You are like the horrid dregs left at the bottom of a pint glass, always bitter.

I wouldn't have the backbox myself, but the man has already mentioned possibly chopping it off.

Oh dear, that looks very much like the stainless system I stupidly bought for my Civic when the original crumbled into many pieces. I can not stand the utterly ridiculous Jap style rear cans so sold that to a young lad and fitted a large generic stainless back box with a reasonably sized tail pipe. Unfortunately the system appeared to have been made from tin foil, and whilst the noise from the tail pipe was reasonable, the awful tinny rasping from the thin pipes resonating was unbearable. Even worse, if the system got splashed by a puddle when hot it would bend like a banana and rattle against the floorpan until it heated up and straightened out. Easily the worst automotive purchase I have ever made in my life (even though it was very cheap for a stainless system).

I hope yours is better, but unless the pipes are made from decent heavy gauge metal I doubt it will be.

Thats where it will be going :)

I am already looking for a replacement exit pipe. The chepaest full system I could find with a twin exit (much more like standard) was significantly more. Lots of other people have done the same, bought this system, then replaced the 4.5 with something more tastefull :D

I like bitter, much better than fizzy lager stuff ;)

Forgot to mention, the current owner of the civic remove it after it developed several cracks and fitted a Blueflame system that is in a different league in terms of quality and sound.

So shiny. My Mgnex back box has gone rusty :(

Might have to paint mine with high temp paint.

With a mani and centre pipe (the usual restrictive part on a Honda), I would expect this to be loud but the bung should tone down the drone nicely if you aren't expecting power gains from it.
