FIFA 09 - Game Discussion Thread

I just need some help quick. Ive been playing online and its going ok my record is 24-18 but i just cant seem to create enough chances i always seem to loose games 1-0 and i cant score. My defence is good but i need to get more goals i play with barca so i have enough goal threats just cant get them into scoring positions?
Any advice would be great.
 
Its hard to lose when playing Barca or Man Utd, i lose most games i play ranked, because i always go lower quality teams, but i out play most of them, it does prove a benefit when i play in leagues though.

through ball and finesse shot = win
 
Love through balls but then I dont have them on assist so I have a lot more control on their exact direction and power, its a bit harder but then you only really need to use them when you are trying to create a break - my fav atm is trying to dink it into the box so the striker volleys it - pulled it off a few times...

My strikers though are generally fast and it seems FIFA likes to play defence with a relatively high line (always switch to defensive mode just to ensure they arent nearer the centre spot than 18yd box)...

I know in custom tactics you can change your defence to either offside trap or cover, but is there anyway to make your defence sit deeper? I get caught out so many times as too far up the pitch
 
Edit your formation - you can physically move players to sit deeper or make it their onus (high/medium/low priority) that when you are defending they fall back. My defence line is setup to always fall back and I ensure one of my CMs is more defensive than the other...

I dont like to use custom tactics as I just dont feel they work when exactly you need them - I just set up my team so they are inherently defensive in nature - only way to attempt to stop people who prefer to just run past you with fast forwards...

I think for my manager team Ive got 5 formations all based on 4-4-2 where these positions and attitudes...

Just a dink just outside of the box - usually when Ive run down the sideline I try and pass it back into the box - generally crosses are always headed out by defence but Im now trying to pass it back to the attacking midfield so they can do a short lofted through ball - generally that means it covers little distance and isnt too high to head away and because of the volley stats and wierd FIFA bugs with lofted through balls the attackers generally get a shot at goal and even crap players seem to get off a half-decent volley and at that range you can get a nice goal.

But I prefer playing the Arsenal way :p More about some nice passes and moves than actual goals (not an Arsenal fan thankfully tho, Villa ;):D)

You can muck around with the custom tactics but I really not sure what combination would provide you with the ideal setup - at least with a physical move (I havent bothered to move them though - if you do move them remember to press 'Square' if you want to re-assign their position - like to Sweeper, Wing-back or Winger etc...) and forcing them to be defensive both in nature and in overall tactics works for me...

Im unsure you can save these squad changes to each team (probably can) but you can save general formations that you can apply to your team. My formation list is quite lengthy :p. I tend to leave the general formation the same as default (4-4-2 or whatever) but change what types of players I have playing and their exact positions (diamond midfield for when I want to play defensive with wing-backs; or mid-field line with wingers when I want to counter-attack etc...)

Be good to know the answer - cant see why you cant, just not bothered - spending far too much time on manager mode and BAP than actually playing normal MP (tbh playing against the same half a dozen teams all the time, just disappoints me)...

very hard to get a game not against manu now, i give them a chance to change to a fairer team, i normaly go 3-4 star, if they dont change i take france and hammer them with anelka/henry combo.
 
I try and play as Sunderland for a laugh - surprising good going forward - though playing as Man City and beating Utd scum is always enjoyable :D...

I've had it with the cpu ****ing me (and others) over tbh. First 2 games were fine, 3rd one was a joke. How can I go from resolutely defending all game, being 2 nil up to losing 3-2? It's like catch up on NFS, EA are like that, why they've put it in a Football game I'll never know.

Sorry for the no show if the first game, my team we're so slow I just couldn't get anywhere. Playing with lower star teams is definitely the way forward, makes for a much better game of football.
