Organ grown in lab, successfully transplanted

that's not so special, my organ grows and is successfully implanted all the time

At the risk of getting aload of abuse/flames/hate, why should people who smoke even be given new organs? I mean look at George Best. Okay his was a slightly different case, alcohol instead of smoking. He was given a second liver, and just took the **** and killed that also, fatally. That liver probably could have saved someone elses life and they would have used it well. This is obvious from the length of the transplant waiting lists...

So to put it simply, I look at smoking as 'willingly harming your own health'.. so why should you be entitled to a new organ (set of lungs, for example)? Assuming this new method eventually works out?

So yeah, flame me.. but it's ridiculous.

The value of someone's life is entirely relative, so its impossible to judge one person over another. Sure they smoke, but they might also contribute a great deal to society.

Plenty of people giving nothing to society but taking a lot - even if they don't smoke, should they be give treatment?

The value of everyones life is equal, no matter who they are, granted. However, giving an organ to someone who will be greatful for it, seems more rewarding in my eyes :)

They shouldn't be given new organs on the NHS, certainly.

But you can bet it will become the cosmetic surgery of the next century.

No, they were born equal, that doesn't mean they contribute the same in life. All children should be given the same chances in life, but for those who throw their life away, greater priority should be given to those more deserving - but its a fine line.

Its why the old often sacrifice themselves for the next generation, its a natural human thing to do.

A cure for HIV can't be far off, I'm sure we'll get cancer soon enough.

/science mode

Unfortunately it is extremely difficult to "cure" HIV as when the virus enters the body and binds to CD4+ cells (a type of white blood cell) the virus RNA enters the cell which is then integrated into the genome (near impossible to remove) thus we can only use a range of drugs (HAART) to surpress the release of more viruses from the infected cell.

It is very difficult to "cure" cancer as it is a completely random mutation in the genome causing the cell to grow out of control, if you kill it then you might be ok, however the fact that you have cancer in the first place indicates you will have an underlying genetic defect in the DNA repair genes etc... so it will more than likely occur again. However there are cases where people have had it, been "cured" and never get it again

/normal

This breakthrouh is amazing and i just wish people with little education would let the scientists do their job and get on with the research in stead of hampering them at every point. However it should be made known the advantages and disadvantages of these methods.... Educating the less educated on these matters would benefit all

and if not..... they can **** off when they need a new throat :p

sorry, I was perhaps a little over the top but just because this is a forum doesn't mean you can be an ass.

If a relative of yours over 30 had died recently and someone said "people used to die at 30" I can't see it going down very well in real life so why accept it on a forum.

He kind of has a point though. You say 71 is "too young". Well, at which point does someone's age move away from the category of "too young"?

IDRTT but we should all be very proud, as this was developed and pioneered by BRITISH scientists- Good to see we are still at the forefront of scientific breakthrough :D

not soon enough imo

i can't help but think that the people who campaign against stem cell use must be totally healthy and would not benefit from it

being ill is frightening, and denying people a more normal way of life is a bigger crime against humanity than growing babies with no thought or feeling for 'parts'

Sounds like a promising development.

Not knowing anything about biology here but that is literally just a pipe? Surely they could make it out of a suitable synthetic (ie plastic) just like they do heart valves?
