I've got my lad a new pre-built machine for xmas.

It has the following spec:

Core 2 Duo PC - E6750, 2Gb RAM, 500Gb HDD, nividia 8500gt (dvi/hdmi), TV card, Wi-fi enabled, LG dvd/RW with lightscribe and a LG dvd rom, front multi media panel, 8xusb 2.0 ports, firewire port, 2x e-sata ports, vista home premium. All brand new for £240.

The only weak point for a gaming machine is the GFX card and 300w psu if upgrade required.

not having had a recent nvidia card, i was wondering if the 8500gt is OK for WOW on high settings than his current X1600 agp?

I would like to think so but as he has some money saved up and the 8500gt doesn't turn to be that good i could do the following upgrade:

Product Name Qty Price Line Total
PNY GeForce 8800 GT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) -
(£70.49) £59.99
OcUK Huntkey 450W PSU OcUK Huntkey 450W PSU £31.99
(£37.59) £31.99
(£37.59)
Sub Total : £91.98

Total : £118.64

so how does the 8500gt pan out for WOW?

Cheers.

with the much more demanding WOTLK no i dont thing a 8500 would do, i know peeps in my guild that run 8400's and 8600's and its chugs along at 10 to 30 with not much going on but when stuff dose happen it become unplayable allmost , so spending the cash on that cheap pny 8800GT would be a good plan ep if your a raider

also depending on the PSU brand 300w should be fine for that spec with a 8800GT , my whole setup (monitor and all) uses about 360w at the wall when runnning wow

Thanks for the info.

I know nothing about WOW.

He has the WOTLK expansion (he got the collectors edition, nice set).

I know the mobo is an MSI one but i need to open the case up and see if I fit in a full size card.

i was wondering if the 8500gt is ok for WOW on high settings

It wont run wow quickly on high settings.

You could easy turn some of them down and it will run wow fine, best bet is to try before you upgrade.

I ran wow for ages fine on a 7300 with some low settings medium res, so the 8500 should easy beat that.

8500GT is about the same performance as a 6800GT give or take - but most will overclock by 60-80% on the core fine which gives them a massive performance boost.

I'd look for a cheap 8800/9800GT with 512Mb RAM to compliment the rest of the system for WoW tho - my brother plays it on a stock 8800GT and Q6600 and gets 90fps average with max settings at 1280x1024 - he had a slightly slower 256Mb videocard in there before and it would crawl in places.

The 8800GT is the better card by a margin - but I'm not sure how well 256Mb will do in WOW if you turn the settings up...

As for the 9600gt, from what posts i've seen, they are just tweaked 8600 cards!!!!!

The 9600gt cards are very good (and certainly not tweaked 8600 cards) but a little overpriced and you would prob need a new psu.

4670 512mb

This is the best bang for buck atm, low power consumption (will be fine on your bogo 300w psu) and great o/c potential too.
