Best Hotel Opening Ever (Dubai)

I've just stumbled across the opening pyrotechnics display for a new hotel in Dubai.

In itself that doesnt sound like much, but 20 million dollars DOES get you one hell of a lot of fireworks and the event itself is amazing.

Organisers claimed that the fireworks display for the $20m party could be seen from space.

I work with somone who has lived there. She says that they got into loads of concerts for free and front row seats etc as she made friends with a Sheikh's Daughter.

I don't know the attraction to Dubai, apart from famous for having lots of great hotels.....what else is there?

Shopping? - can do that in NYC and you get a lot more for your money than just nice hotel and shopping in NYC. If you want hot weather, surely somewhere more tropical and less desert like would be more ideal.

Impressive display, but kinda samey all over and i was bored 2 mins in. All those guest seemed like they were paid to be there and probably were to make the guest list more impressive.

NYC doesn't have a ski resort in the middle of the desert.

I rather do it for real in the Alps, it's a bit like going to Vegas to see the Eiffel Tower, no, sorry, that's just tacky.

These Dubai hotels seem to be all the same. A lot of money spent, but still look tacky as hell. As somebody said, money doesn't buy class. Putting lots of gold and water features everywhere doesn't make a good hotel.

I'd really rather stay in a 3* country hotel with some character..
