Survivors

i think burnsy should go and learn to be survivalist like that guy on discovery. i bet u love it

I've thought about doing that very thing. I have quite an interest in the whole survival thing. BTW Ray Mears is awesome when you see one of his presentations live.

I think you're wrong there... I think (in the original) all the 'Survivors' had the disease, but just survived it.

If you recall 'Paul' caught typhoid or something from a visit to a town for supplies. It had nothing to do with the flu virus.

The survivors having the disease, but surviving it, was of particular importance as in one episode they met some survivors who had been out of touch with people through the whole affair. Withing a week, they were dead, killed by the virus the 'Survivors' had kindly brought to them.

From then on, you often heard them asking any new people they met, 'have you had the disease,' obviously not keen to kill anymore people who had not yet come into contact with it.

http://www.survivorstvseries.com/Paul.htm suggests it was a 'disease' I'll have a watch tonight to see what Ruth said it was. If see knew that is. I'm not sure Jenny ever had it either?

I take it your a fan then? Some of the first series is the best TV I've ever seen.

Huh? Yes, like I said, Paul died from something like typhoid (or murine typhus?), which the last time I check, is a disease :)

However:-
1) He didn't die from the flu virus that killed 99%+ of everyone else.
2) And I believe (in the original) all the 'Survivors' had fallen ill to the flu virus, but had survived it. Unlike the new series where some seemed to have it, and other's didn't get it at all?!

In the original series the survivors are 1 in 20,000 which wouldn't leave a large population in the UK, probably too few to prevent a near complete technolagy loss and a reversion to medieval or earlier civilisation.

Yep... That's what was always being talked about in the original series... How far would humanity slip back (eg: to medieval times). And would there even be enough people left in the UK (or elsewhere) to rebuild the species numbers back up.

The only thing I don't quite get, and I am sure I will get corrected here, is how they manmaged to have no electricity.

Surely even if only one nuclear power station was kept running, with such low demand the output across the national grid would be more than enough.

When I went for a tour of Wylfa Head in Angelsey, people there are pretty much just monitoring it at all times the automated processes run the station and ramp up output as demand decrees.

Maybe when they realised no one was even there to monitor it, they switched it off to prevent problems...

But it's an interesting thought. If everyone just disappeared off the planet, Vegas would probably stay illuminated for nigh on a 100 yrs, powered by the Hoover damn on auto!

I believe Nuclear power stations will stop to function in the event of an apocalyptic event, however I'm not sure what would happen in the event of small drain on the grid.

Well I didn't watch the programme... but I guess you need a well trained team of people to run a power plant... and on top of that you need the electricity network to be maintained (the national grid).

Indeed. The national grid takes a lot of maintenence, I'm sure it'd be shut down in this sort of scenario to prevent other issues.

Nice topic Burnsy :)

As I'm in central london the **** would hit the fan: it would be absolute chaos in big cities. Piles of dead, frenzied populace trying to escape, roads blocked etc. It would be anarchy between the survivors. People would be squabbling amongst themselves: who says that you're the boss? Why should I do what you tell me? And that kind of thing.

I'd be looking out for myself for sure here in London. First thing first, pack two bags:
1. My small backpack containing a change of clothes and something warm to put on. Also I'd put in a bottle of water and something to eat.
2. My laptop bag containing the laptop and phone and the largest kitchen knives.

Next I'd head out of the building and proceed to commandeer the first motorbike that i could find and then raid a boots for a first aid kit and some water purification tablets.
A few minutes later I'd speed out of London heading either North to the Highlands or to the nearest Port/ Marina in order to acquire a boat.
The boat would become Voltar HQ for that night. During which I'd scout around to find more fuel and food and water. Also I'd get a whole load of coffee and cigarettes and red bull: I'm not going to be sleeping until I set sail.
Once satisfied with whatever I could find in the previous 24hours I'd leave and start using the boats GPS and Radio systems to find the OcUK safehouse. Or I'd head to Holland and then see what I find there.
After that the usual find a generator and tinned food and water would ensue.

Personally I don't think I'd start looking for anyone for about a week or so after the outbreak to make sure that the virus could work its' potential course and then I'd look for some survivors and weapons.

Once subjugated, my minions would help establish a feudal society in which the elite (in terms of most useful, strongest, most intelligent and capable) would begin making plans for a new small society.
