When is diesel REALLY a cheaper option?

Ok, I can feel myself getting sucked into the Diesel v Petrol "debate", but I refuse to rise to it.

It's a marmite thing :)

I think its more of a people that say Diesels are good have never driven a good petrol engine or dont really enjoy driving. :p

I'd like to see an example of cost comparisons that went beyond the litre price, yes they are more to buy but also resale is higher so what are you actually loosing ?

I agree (and have argued with friends in favour of petrol), but i'm not confident that this is backed up by actaul cost of ownership over, say three years.

Obviously I can't be bothered to do it myself :D

Oh really? When I owned my Peugeot 306 XLd diesel was more than petrol, and that was 3.5 years ago and for about 18 months.

The only time diesel has been cheaper than petrol was before I started driving over 4 years ago, getting on for 5. :/

wrong. summer of 2007, diesel went cheaper. i bought my derv in this time too, bonus.

This is what annoys me, is that people diesels will try and justify it when they've spent 8k on a newer diesel car when their car was perfectly fine. For what reason? So they can drive what sounds like a tractor and save £100 a year on road tax

Of course diesels work out better on long mileage and seem to be a bit more robust but so what, diesel isnt 1000000x times better than petrol as most people with oil burners insist

I think the key word there is average.

How people buy a Diesel for the aweful way they drive is beyond me.

Dont Diesels spit out aload of crap so I dont see how they can be "green" as such.

Same reason a lot of people prefer a twin cylinder bike as opposed to an IL4. Some people just prefer torque to bhp.

I drive a petrol now, but thoroughly enjoyed the Focus diesel I had as a company car
