David Lloyd- worth it?

Hi,

I'm currently a member of a local hotel gym, which whilst adequate is often busy and could do with refurbishment. Also it's missing barbells/squat racks etc all of which i'd like to incorporate into my training now.

As such i've been toying with the idea of changing gyms- is anyone here a member of a David Lloyd club (my options are pretty much David Lloyd, Fitness First or a local bodybuilder's gym- i'd rather a gym with a pool etc though)? If so- how do you find it? Busy? Worth the money?

Cheers,

Mike

Im a member of David Lloyd (Renfrew, Glasgow) and cant see past it, yes ok, its expensive, and yes in Jan/Feb it does get busy with all the new year "fanatics" but the rest of the year its pretty quiet, huge range of equiptment and never busy enough that all machines are used up. They also have the best range of studio class in the area with every les mills class (if it takes your pic).

Depends on what your looking for really, we pay £115 joint membership to include all racquet sports.....

Find a gym that has everything that you need that is in your budget.
go there at the time you would normally go yourself to see how busy it is.

If both of the above make you think "this is good for me", then sign up.

I'm a member at the Nottingham one and it's fantastic.

Big cardio area and a weights area, both machines and free weights. Dumbells go up to 50kg, not that I'll ever get up to that and it's relatively quiet at times too.

It's entirely down to what you need or want from a gym. If a pool is something you want/need then go for it. Personally for me, I don't need anything a "fitness" gym provides and would tend to go towards a spit 'n' sawdust bodybuilding gym, you have to balance costs with what you want and what goals you're after too.

DL gyms are known to be pretty good in spite of their generic-ness.

lead head i've got a free pass to the nottingham one for 12 days so going to check it out. I want to play some squash against my friend but i'm the only one with the pass you reckon they will allow it? Which one in nottingham do you go to? Will see you there and one day i will push those 50kg :P

I was a member at Gosforth (north east). Been to a couple all over the country. People are really canny, enjoyed training there. Good atmosphere, just a bit of hassle when i wanted to terminate my membership.

It is pricey but if you can afford it, then do it. My membership included everything and i made the most of it. Met a lot of people aswell.

I go to the one just off the ring road in Aspley.

You'll have to speak to them about it, but I think they might be funny about it. I'm sure you can pay for a day pass though, something like £10 maybe split that between you and your pal?

EDIT: Forgot to say if you join now you pay £30 for the date you joined up until 1st Jan, then you're contract starts from there.

I got a free ipod and 3 months free when i joined. Maybe a bit of negotiations with the membership department could work to your advantage.

I dont go to the gym, but many of my friends do :)

From what they have told me, they dont like going to David Lloyd because the crowd is too middle age.

They prefer to go to Virgin Active which has more of a young vibe. It's cheaper too.

This is in Leeds btw.

If you have an interest in tennis, squash, badminton or the like and want to go to a gym, david lloyd is brilliant. I only wish there was one closer to where I lived / worked :(

used to be a member but the cancellation policy of 3 months is a pain.

it's expensive, but that can be a good thing as you don't get any "riff raff" there if that's what your looking for :)

One of the big advantages go DL is the crowd. No chavs and no roid rage foreigners.

I am and love it. It is pretty expensive, but as I go so often it actually works out less per visit than the council gym. And the standard of bird you get at DL is definately better.

Does your local council operate a membership scheme for it's sports services. The value offered by these schemes is rarely matched.

The two councils interact with both do, and almost everything you want is offered. Some of the classes might be missing, but if you just want gym, squash, swimming and a few basic classes you would get it for about £30 a month with no joining fee.

Since joining the university, I pay £13 for Gym Membership, so everything seems overpriced.

I recently found out that all Gyms in Birmingham are going to be made free (memberships paid for by the council), so good news if you live there!

David Lloyd is not a real gym. It is a gym where many faggots gather to pretend they are strong and buff.

Please go somewhere decent like golds gym/ymca etc etc

Lol at your post, the David Lloyd is a very well equipped gym and probably one of the nicest ones I have ever been to:cool:. The only problem I had is no 45kg + dumbbells, not enough 25kg plates, over priced!

Oh and to my knowledge we dont have a Golds gym or YMCA in the uk:(.
