Thailand Trip

Well im not sure yet . I've been over quite a few times. because im half thai. i've got family over there and pretty much been all over and seen everything but its just a place i want to experience with some mates because the nightlife is pretty good.

do not take a tuk tuk

One of the best forms of transport know to man, you jsut have to make sure they understand they won't get paid unless they take you where you want to go rather than taking you to their friend's suit shop.

Floating market was quite good, tiger temple was the worst thing i've ever been to

Pataya is full of old men with very young girls, don't do it.

All true.

Seeing the tigers doped out of their minds so that tourists can go and have their photo taken with them is just so wrong.

Went for just over two weeks this summer with the misses, spent first three nights in Bangkok - It's allright but a bit to hectic and mental for me. We then took a flight to Chiang Mai where we spent 5 nights including a 2 day jungle trek - This was the best bit of the holiday for me, I could spend weeks in northern Thailand it's absolutely stunning and has a pace of life that really agrees with me. We then took a flight south and spent 1 night in Phuket - Seedy hell hole, before taking the ferry to Ko Phi Phi where we spent 6 nights - Ko Phi Phi is a paradise not cheap but stunning the snorkling is amazing.

Now the price, we didn't do it on the cheap nor did we go the most expensive routes we like to Holiday not slum it so I think it came in at about £1600 each for flights and hotels. While we we there we spent about £500 quid each we ate well but didn't bring much stuff back avoiding the tailor made suits etc.

We went in August which made our direct flights on Thai air expensive but the plus point was it's the off season when you get there so everywhere particularly the beaches is that little bit quieter.

my big regret in Thailand, we got invited over to stay for a few nights with some Thai friends, but didn't have time

That's a big shame, because even though you have a great time doing all the normal things people do in Thailand, when you get a chance to spend time with actual thais you (or at least me anyway) see how hollow and superficial the experience actually is.

Alex2001 (or anyone else that's been), do you have anymore info on the north of Thailand? I'm going traveling around SE Asia in Jan and am looking at the North of Thailand, particular Chiang Mai, Pai, Mae Hong Son, and Mae Sariang.

Trouble is the budget for our trip is not as big as I hoped for so I'm looking at places to cut out of the trip and northern Thailand is one of those we might have to dip out on.

I will be backpacking so the way I live will probably be very different to those who have been on a holiday mind.

I was there a couple of months ago and they did not seem drugged at all. They bring them out at a time of day when they are usually asleep, so they may seem a bit slow but certainly not drugged.

Edit: Confirmed by the RSPCA - http://www.tigertemple.co.uk/story.htm

I've spent two months in Chiang Mai and if I were you I'd definitely try to get it in, even if you're just there for 4-5 days. You don't have to spend a huge amount of money either, you can get a 'decent' room in the centre of Chiang Mai for about ฿100 a night, have an elephant riding+trekking day for ฿600-700 and maybe try a cooking class for a few hundred too, and it's all good fun. Definitely head up to the north to get a different experience to the standard BKK, pattaya, southern islands affair.

Who am I to lecture on such things, but if you are going as a backpacker, don't help to perpetuate the stereotypes of them; walking through the streets swigging 40oz's, shouting like monkeys, going about topless etc. A lot of backpackers seem to think 'being in thailand' is a license to go wild, because the Thai people don't mind it!

In reality they do, whilst they might not say it to your face, they've certainly told me how they feel. Change the paradigm!

Cheers Skull. Will have to work on my budget more to see if I can fir it in.

A lot of people in here seem very against Pattaya. Why is this? I haven't really looked at it tbh, it's not en route to anywhere I'm going so it will involve going out the way. I would prefer to spend more time on one of the Southern islands like Ko Lanta and Ko Tao or even somewhere on the coast like Krabi. However my gf who I'll be traveling with has mentioned going there.

Because it is well-reputed as being full to the brim with prostitutes and old European men.

the elephant riding in kanchanaburi is awesome - swimming with them in the River Kwai was incredible

Tiger temple was utter, utter tripe!!!

The area was barren, nothing to see apart from drugged tigers chained to the ground, who didn't move at all. There was a "temple" which was a tourist trap.

"Oh, they sleep during the day" - what a load of rubbish, if tigers had people clambering all over them, they'd rip them to shreds.

Even the baby ones we played with were out of it.
