Hi there,

Putting a lowly PC together for a 12 year old, to play games like 3 year old ms flight sim and other older games its on an Asrock p4v890 mobo with pci express 3ghz p4 cpu 2gb ram going to run vista so has to be good with that as well...whats best bang for say no more than 45 quid I have searched through but not finding anything of use in the Gfx threads.

cheers

I personally wouldn't want to run Vista on a P4. But as for graphics cards, a Radeon 3450 or 3650 should do the trick.

thanks guys...yes i know vista wont be brilliant on 2gb but I can try it see how it goes 2gb is limit on mobo..

I am doing a similar thing but I am building 2 computers for the kids .. so, in the interests of experimentation I have ordered a £45 4650 512 AND a £45 256 8800GT (Both +VAT) .... so I will soon know which is better @ 1280x1024 (the res that I am targeting) along with power consumption etc as I will compare them in the same rig .. as an aside I have also got an E1200 celeron to try out too with these :D and compare it to my undervolted and underclocked 6320 ... (I started out with a £50 budget for the cards)

The ATI HD3650 is **** (see techpowerup's comprehensive benchmark suite). I wouldn't go any lower than the Geforce 9500GT or Radeon HD4650 cards.

If you're running Vista, you need at least 4gig to run properly.
You can scrape by with 2gig but it's not pleasant.

I've ran Vista HP 32 since release with 2GB of ram, didn't notice any problems. Now running 4GB on Ultimate 64, little noticeable difference in all honesty. I guess if you running 2 gigs of uber slow single channel crap

Vista requires 512MB RAM for basic, 1GB for the others. :)

Based on what? My laptop runs Vista Home premium (32bit) on 2GB of memory without a problem. I also ran a Desktop system with Vista X64 on 2GB of memory without an issue and gaming wise (CF HD4850) it was more than pleasant.....

As for the op a second hand 8600GT should suffice for these sorts of games whilst being relatively quiet and power efficient (Although don't pay too much for one as 256mb 8800GT's can be picked up for not much more than £40)

8800GT 512mb tend to go for around £50-55 in the members market :) And a damn good card for that money, I would guess that it's a lot more powerful than an equivalently priced new card :)

Hi mate, I think you should be fine on vista with 2GB ram, I've certainly had no problems. Went from XP to Vista 64 and in all honesty didn't notice any difference :)

Absolute rubbish.... Runs absolutely fine with 2gb
Although I do agree a p4 is a bit lowly.

I just picked up a 7900GTO for £45 (2nd hand) I would be looking for something like that.
