HD4870 1gb vs. GTX 260-216

Well you better hope that the card does not break, coz XFX have the worst customer support. I had a nightmare with them with my 7900GT. The fan was on full speed at all times. Sounded like a hair dryer. I sent it to them and they said there was nothing wrong with it. But even the retailer I got it from agreed it was not working right and gave me a full refund. I was without a graphics card for nearly a month!

That was not the only problem actually, just remembered I was getting graphical glitches in Age of Empires 3. Tested it in a few other comps and the same was happening so it was the card.

This was an interesting read looks like at stock the 4870 1gb is still faster than the gtx260. This review was done using the new 180.43 nvidia drivers. They also go on to say that they would have the 4870 1gb over the gtx260+.

180.43 were BETA drivers released back in October to improve performance in Far Cry 2 only, 140.48 were the big bang drivers so the review is kind of out of date.

Cheers for that! Well I've decided to go for the XFX GTX 260 216 Black Edition - Highest clocked version out there! :D

After looking at many benchmarks and reviews... well, it's got to be a GTX260 216 esp if you have a SLI motherboard. But to be fair, the 4870 1GB can still hold it's own :)

EVGA used to do a KO (Knock Out) but TBH I cannot remember if the new 9000 Series has a KO. :o

Do EVGA actually release the F.T.W cards in the UK? I remember before I got my Asus card I was looking for one but only found them in the states.

Yes the GTX280 was avail here in F.T.W form at launch when all the GTX280's were priced very high.

I think EVGA are based in Germany so UK will get before USA.

Different motherboards* were used for the nVidia and ATI cards so unless they used one of each card to get a control sample in each board you can't directly compare the numbers. Given that most reviews using the same motherboard for each card show a different ratio for gains and losses I'd say those results can only be taking an an approximation within 10% for comparison purposes.

*IIRC the FSB straps correctly 333MHz on an X38 board gives the same performance as ~360MHz on the nForce. They should have compared them both running a 400FSB bus to get more accurate comparisons.

Never had issues with XFX so should be ok :) I have purchased many XFX graphics cards over the years and the only one that had to go back was replaced quickly by XFX support... guess they were having a good day  :p

I just bought a HD 4870 1GB on Friday which I am now regretting. It was sort of an impulse buy last Friday when I was picking up a hard drive that I had forgotten to order for a new build. As some of you have said it is hit and miss with this card regarding game performance. Performance in Crysis has not improved that much compared to my old 8800 GTS.

I have not used ATI for awhile so surprised at how many driver related bugs there are with new games. In Clear Sky I get a weird graphic distortion when it rains with wet surfaces enabled. In Far Cry 2 I get frame skipping which I have found a work-a-round for by capping the frame rate in the console.

I should have stuck with the green team.

If you were looking to play Far Cry 2 and Crysis, why on earth did you chose the 4870 :O

Hitting 54FPS average all high, 1680x1050 in Crysis on my 260-192. 4870 doesn't come close!

I love seeing peeps comparing competitors standard cards to overclocked ones, then saying the overclocked one is so much better

Compare like for like please peeps!

lol......

What do the ATi Hotfix drivers do.... performance optimizations....

I'd probably hazard a guess that it is unlikely that every NV user did not experience some problem in Farcry 2.

Knew the excuse wouldn't be long, but it wont wash im afraid as its the same thing, its a driver to improve performance in Far Cry 2, that is all (you have even said that is all it does), so its just like ATi's Far Cry 2 hotfix drivers, as they were also drivers to improve the performance of Far Cry 2. :D :D

Just one more time. :p

180.43 were BETA drivers released back in October to improve performance in Far Cry 2 only.

from the ATi hotfix drivers.

Improves performance for the DirectX 9 version of Far Cry 2 on CrossFire™ compatible systems

Improves performance for the DirectX 10 version of Far Cry 2 on both single and CrossFire™ compatible systems

The difference with these drivers is though, they aint Far Cry 2 only.

Anyway back on topic now, that 260-216 Black Edition is a cracker of a card from the reviews ive seen. :)

All i got was some dll missing 5 times, but then i just pressed enter 5 times and it was sorted.

I benchmarked it at 1920x1200 @ ultra high everything and got 22-30fps all the time with no stutter. Im on a 260-192 with 178 drivers.

Also in gameplay everything was fine never had any stuttering and it looked amazing.

So, why do i need this "hotfix" your talking about ?

If you don't want it don't have it.....

The same applys for ATi users.....

But it wont run properly on ati cards without the hotfix. THIS is the point, nvidia drivers are much better than ati ones.

Plus i game 8 hours a day if i have a day off, and i fold the other 16, folding on ati cards = fail.
