Hi, I previously posted about my new rig I'm building so sorry for opening a new thread but this question is a little more specific.

With price being the limiting factor. Should I go for an i7 920 and GTX sli (2 way)

or

I7 940 and single GTX 280

Also will have 3Gb of 1600MHz ram be enougth or will the gpu's need 6Gb to work at there best?

Me, well I obviously thought that an overclocked quad was needed to supply my 8800GTX with all the data it needed :D lol! ... I have run my dual core @ 3.0 GHz and my quad at 3.9GHz and I can barely find a difference (not saying there was not any of course!)! Now, if I were you I'd go Sli on the video side and just clock the cpu as necessary (if you actually need to at all!)
 
On a budget for a game machine go for a 920 SLi GTX280 and 6Gb of 1333Mhz.

The difference between a 920 and 940 won't show on air cooling. Even if you watercool the extra MHz wouldn't translate to a lot of fps, assuming you can get to around 3.8GHz on air, which you should. Not much real would performance difference between 1333MHz and 1600MHz ram. Spend the extra on more ram which will help. The P6T or GA-EX58-UD5 would be a good board choice.

Thanks people. I though it would be the sli option but been reading about how high end cards can be bottle necked by cpu, i guess thats only a concern when everything else is maxed out.

Yer i was aiming for a p6t board and 6Gb of either 1333MHz or 1600Mhz

Depends on the resolution you plan to run. If it's a 'normal' resolution, go for more power on the CPU. If you plan to run insane-huge resolutions, go for more power on the GPU.
 
I7 920 and GTX260 Maxcore is what I would go for (Well I would have gone for this had I not got two of the standard 192sp cards for such a good price ;)) The performance difference from the GTX260 to the GTX280 doesn't warrant the price increase.

Also the HD4870X2 should also be considered in this price range. The only reason I didn't go for one is its comparatively weak folding performance.
