Well I just thought I would stick these on here since Im so impressed with them. The freeware airplane developer Project Open Sky (well known as POSKY) recently released their Embraer ERJ series (ERJ 135, 140, 145, 145XR and more) and the Boeing 777-200 (ER, LR included). Now neither of these have ultra-realistic avionics so dont expect a Level-D or PMDG-style flight deck here but if you are a casual heavy-metal driver these fit the bill perfectly.

Some work is needed to install all of them as each has its own aircraft.cfg along with custom model files but beleive me its worth it!

The virtual cockpits are brilliantly done and these exceed the quality of some payware airplanes.

So yea...if you havent got these go get 'em

You can get them here amongst Poskys other releases. Simmers never had it so good me thinks!

Wow very detailed! Everytime I see a flight simulator screenie I wanna boot it up and go flying :D See you in the air ;)

If only you could play Flight Simulator in some kind of MMO environment, wreak havoc in the air, haha - never really had the patience myself sadly :(

They are primarily designed for FS9. You *can* use them in FSX but theres quite a bit of tweaking involved and you lose some features.

I took these shots in FS9.

See you in the air

Woot! Yea see u up there!

Hee hee maybe this is for you? :)

Looks pretty good, is it as complicated as FS is? Okay, the last time i actually tried when i was a lot younger, but i could never get the hang of it at all!

Useful reminder that I must get FS2004 reinstalled. Sound like an ideal addition to my fleet in FS Passengers, along with David Maltby's excellent VC10!

FS is as complex or as simple as you want to make it :) Theres planes you can just start up and fly while on the other end of the spectrum you get stuff thats so realistic (Level-D 767, PMDG 747-400) that it hurts your head! Personally Im somewhere in the middle!

Dude...if you ask me - a heavily-modded FS9 is way nicer than FSX! There is SO much freeware out there to mod it. An *insane* amount actually and the freeware quality is so good you will be shocked its free even. What you see in these screenshots is the tip of the iceberg!

I miss my custom planes from FS4
What happened to them!?

I must say they are impressive freeware quality, i would be happy to pay for both aircraft, ill be using that ERJ on a daily basis for my small hops, stunning, get in VC with TrackIR4..just pure joy

Thanks for the headsup i would have missed these, as i normally get the payware aircraft.

To answer ken, What you do in it, is totally up to you, you can fly around from any airport in the world, fly to anywhere...You can fly the real flight paths making all the stops on the way, real fuel and cargo weights, or you can pick a place and destination and fly..You can set the auto pilot to do the flying as they would on a real flight and take over for the landings, you can interact with ATC, theres air traffic..thats a rundown of some points.

You can fly the planes with a keyboard, but you wouldnt have much fine control, so a joystick is the prefered method of controlling a flight sim.

Basically the clue was in the title, Flight Simulator, as a driving simulator simulates driving (racing/cruising etc) this is for planes no combat, just civil, although there are lots of military aircraft addons to potter around in.

to most people its the most boring concept, to others its fun to relax and watch the virtual world go round from 30,000ft, with real time seasons, night and day...and Accurate weather feeds based on what its really doing in whatever part of the world your flying in.

How's the fuel burn looking on the Triple 7?

I really really really really want a PMDG-detailed 777 but if they've got the FDE and fuel burn figures for this somewhere near I may very well be tempted away from the NG/Queen/LDS.

There are a few enhancements that can make FS more interesting. FS Passengers is one of the more obvious though at present only for FS2004. I believe the developer is working on an FSX version but not quite ready yet. Basically it allows you to set up your own airline within FS and depending on the difficulty level you choose it either provides an economic reason for making your flights (hauling pax/freight) or can also be set to generate random failures in your aircraft systems. The economics are simplified - it's not a full management sim in the style of Airline 6 - but I find it really makes the flights worthwhile.

Lesser products offering similar commercial elements are Cargo Pilot and Airliner Pilot from Just Flight.

Another option is to join a "Virtual Airline" though this is a bit of an acquired taste and TBH I've never stuck with one more than a few months. (Usually because they require a minimum monthly flight, but the problem is when something else comes along FS tends to go on the backburner for a while).

If you add some enhanced terrain or VFR scenery you can visit places you're unlikely to see in real life and it doesn't cost you a £600 air fare for the privilege!

At the end of the day it's a rush to recreate the roar of the engines as you take off and that initial steep turning climb, albeit in 2D without the real G-forces at work. Also the first time you nail a visual approach to a non-ILS airport and actually put the plane down on the runway - feel pretty smug about that. There's also the historical thing - if you're interested in aviation FS gives you the opportunity to experience aircraft long since retired from pax service (like the DC10, VC10 or Tristar).

Thought I would chuck this one on here as well. This plane is from one of our own and probably the UKs best airplane creator in my opinion! Rick Piper! He has made this excellent freeware HS.748 turboprop complete with virtual cockpit and stellar modelling. And for those of you on here that know your airplanes - you have to hear the Rolls Royce Dart sounds on this thing....they are so authentic-sounding. Its the best-sounding propjet I thinks!

I never really got the point of FS, do you just fly from A-B?

For me the "point" is learning, putting new knowledge into action and seeing the results. This might be mastering the controls of an aircraft so you can start it with all systems shut down (cold & dark), it might be learning to navigate using the nav radios and ground beacons, it might be learning to use complex navigation aids and flight management computers, or more. The actual flight from A to B is probably the most boring part for me, as most of the complex work is done before you reach cruising altitude. It's a simulator so to get the most out of it you need to treat it like one, start off like a trainee pilot in a small Cessna, learn the controls, navigation etc then progress onto a twin, learn more complex nav aids and instrumentation then progress onto a regional jet / turboprop etc.
