Plasma Tv Advice

Well whoever told you that knows absolutely nothing about tvs at all. A good plasma is actually more reliable than an LCD and will have less faults, plus has better and more natural picture quality.

You could get that set, but samsungs have reliability problems and inherant faults on a number of their sets. Find yourself a good panasonic plasma which are very good for the price. A 50 PX8 can be had in one of the high street electrical stores for 699, with the pz80 or pz81 costing a bit more becuase of additional features and 1080p.

How far will you sit from the set and what will your usgae be, E.g. 50% tv, 30% console games, 20% blu rays and dvds.

I wouldnt touch a samsung plasma if it were my choice (however some of their LCD's are pretty decent)

Plasma's as a whole are very good, but you really need to look at Panasonic or Pioneer really (generally the cheaper plasma's arent as good as the LCD in the same price range, however pay a bit more and you get much better quality imo)

there are good /reliable manufacturers/models of both types - there are also bad/unreliable ones

Check out avforums.com if you want some more broad ranging advice :)

The Samsung plasmas I have seen have been alright - betterthan any LCD I have seen. But the Pannys still beat the Sammys in terms of VFM and PQ.

I am planning to buy a 50 plasma tv for Christmas but I have been told not to buy a plasma because they are unreliable and picture quality is not as good as LCD any advice ?

The tv is http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...bcat=&name=Samsung Series 4 PS50A457P1DXXU 50"%20HD%20Ready%20Freeview%20Plasma%20TV

Whoever said that knows nothing.

SD sources (freeview in particular) will be FAR better than an LCD. They are not unreliable.

IMO I rate plasmas over LCD now for anything, whether it is gaming (as long as you are sensilbe, saying that I play hours of Guitar Hero, FIFA, FPS games etc with no issues), movies, tv etc.

GET A PLASMA

Hahaha saturday joker :D

LCDs seem to need firmware updates especially the samsungs, they have horrible viewing angles where the picture changes if you move off centre, plus how on earth can you say they produce a more natural CRT like picture I don't know. LCDs are good for being a monitor or sole gaming, otherwise a good plasma wipes the floor.

Please get your facts straight before preaching nonsense.

the viewing angle on my old 40w2000 was about 170/170. thats hardly horrible? unless it's a tn-film panel (whoich any half decent lcd tv wont be) viewing angles wont even be a consideration.

What are the faults with both?

Generally speaking LCD tends to be a value driven market and Plasma tends to be a quality driven market. Ignoring the Sony's, which are excellent but carry a premium over other LCDs, if you have a fixed budget a plasma will generally produce a better image than an LCD for any reasonable budget, in my opinion.

My preference is for plasma since I feel it produces a more natural image and better blacks as well as having a better response.

With LCDs, smearing, viewing angles are not great on any of them compared to a plasma, as in the picture varies a fair amount as soon as you move off centre. Blacks have caught up, but I can't really comment on black detail as it isn't easy to test in a crap showroom. But the biggest fault for me is damn samsung LCDs and their constant firmware updates, would drive me mad.

Some Plasmas obviously still have some IR problems but that's really on the LGs.

Really really need to get a sticky up, soo many people can't use search or make up their own minds, and we just regurgitate the same **** every day :p

I totally 100% agree with this comment.. I've had Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Plasma's and NOTHING comes close to a Panny.... Which is why i now own two of them... and got rid of everything else..

Okay why wouldn’t you touch a Samsung plasma?

ive ordered that exact set for my living room mostly from a price aspect and it will be replacing a 5 yr old RPT set so im quite sure it will look miles better :D
if you do decide to buy check out this thread for settings over at avforums

i also have a samsung LCD which i use for gaming on the xbox and cant fault it (although its only 26")

I have seen a few people saying "avoid Samsung Plasmas", one of whom is badbob, who says it is something to do with the electronics.

Personally, my Samsung plasma is one of the best things I have ever owned. I ****ing love it. Games, movies, TV, all look awesome and I wouldn't swap it for anything (other than a Pioneer :p)

I find Panasonic TV's ugly, shallow I know.

Of all the plasma's I have seen the pq of the Samsung's for my personal taste dont seem to be anywhere as good - and in direct comparison for the same money as a Samsung plasma there are equally as good LCD's

Along with that I dont believe currently Samsung have the plasma experience to be making decent models - maybe in a year or two the general quality will improve, but when I viewed the Samsung's along side Pio and Pana models, they just looked cheap and nasty in pq and real physical quality

I have a panny 42" PZ85, picture quality is superb. I recently replaced this with a 52" LCD, but fortunately it suffered from clouding, so i was able to return it for a full refund, ive decided just to stick with my panny.

The only thing id now consider replacing it with is the pioneer, but the cost of the 50" is too much at the moment.
