star wars holographic-like 3d tv by 2018

"In order for 3DTV to become a reality, a number of significant technological developments need to be made. Importantly this includes the development of technology to allow programmes to be created which can be televised in this format and the ability to transmit the vast amount of information needed to realise a fully 3D image"

Personally I would have thought that was the easiest bit by far, I'm no expert though.

We need proper physical 3D generation so that we can accurately plot and track ships of war and star born bodies in space.

This will become important when we have to defend our solar system against an impending attack from an aggressive species, I am not sure 2018 is soon enough.

Interesting. I wonder what my uni tutor thinks about this (He's a professor on multimedia agents). Personally, I'm not convinced that the industry will be able to move that fast especially as the film industry doesn't move particularly quickly.

3D TV already exists and is due to be launched as soon as the HD sales peak across the UK

I have seen the future and it looks ... well ... lets say cool(ish) but not worthy of getting all worked up over.

Its from one of the big TV broadcasters (i will leave it to you to guess as i will get a rollicking for saying!) and it involves you having to wear a pair of rather unflattering yellow tinged ray ban like glasses!

But it will cost more than HD does but doesn't use special TV's done on current TV formats.

I can't wait until every program on TV is a 3D head or some other object I have to orbit whilst dribbling at how awesome everything is... I would rather work with todays system of a 2D array of pretty colours and noise that I get to sit down to watch whilst dribbling at how awesome everything is.

Seems to me like it'd be a bit of a novelty, there's no real reason scientists need to waste their time doing this. It's not like when you go to a live performance you get annoyed that you can't stand up and view the play from all angles. I certainly don't feel like I'm missing out on anything by watching it in 2D anyway.

When I was a kid I always dreamt that one day they would have 3d tv and you could lie on the floor and look up skirts!

Am I the only one who used to think this?
