Authentic watch vs Replica

I have a few authentic Rado's but I also tend to buy Jacob and Co Replica's, simply due to the fact I would like to buy a few within their range but to spend 5 x £20K on watches would be ridiculous and if you lost it or it got stolen or even smashed it on a drunken night out, you would be pretty devastated, I know I was when i smashed one of my Rado's after a night out when i fell over, luckily it was rather cheap to get it fixed from their service centre.

nasty

seriously though, who cares how the parts inside are moving? as long as it looks good and tells the time, thats why i go for Rado and not Rolex, I do like the look of some breitlings though, might get one in a few years, its more of an older man's watch.

Exactly my point. It seems many people do care about whats inside much to my surprise

A cheapish Seiko shows the time the same way a Rolex does and probably equally accurately if not the difference would be negligible. Also unlike expensive cars with a watch you can't tell the difference between it and a good replica unless you really KNOW about watches.

A question for someone who knows about this subject. Does a watch with 20+ jewels etc. really costs thousands to be made? How can they justify the price?

Our lass has no idea what is good and what is bad in the watch world, but I have a cheap Seiko (that I don't wear any more, granted) and an Omega Seamaster. It is easy to tell the difference. It's as clear as night and day.

cant believe you guys get a semi from watch movements, its all about looks for me

You have to like the look of a watch obviously, that's the real reason I'd never own a Jacob&Co, and would certainly never have a replica. Looks aren't everything though, same as a car.

Would you buy an MR2 kit if it was a good one to make it look just like a Ferrari?

to each is own, i think rados and jacobs are as ugly as they are tacky but I'm old and it's not me they're trying to fool

I should be right in their demographic though and I wouldn't be seen dead wearing a Jacob&Co! Might as well wear a Pop Swatch :D

when I say cheapish Seiko I dont really mean one with plastic bracelet etc.

Lets say a good £100 replica of yours. If you put it next to your Omega am not sure you can tell much of a difference just by looking at it. I have seen some replicas that have really surprised me.

Depends if your a collector, or just want something to wear out that looks half-decent, a lot of people here saying your a pykey for buying a fake, likewise your also a bit of a tool for paying some overinflated price for some mass produced watch that only has one function.

I have a replica Tag Heuer - Formula 1, I have compared it to a genuine model, and there is no way you can tell the difference, same size, same weight, same feel, same material ..... Considering the cost difference, my Tag cost a total of £40 including delivery, in the shop they are £720 (I do believe), so even if the watch broke once every 6 months, I could go for years and years and still make a saving. p.s. been wearing it everyday for 4~ months so far and no problems.

In the old days perhaps the designer watches where hand crafted, but today a Omega/Tag is as mass produced as the replica versions knocking around.

My advice is, unless your a collector or you want to start collecting them, save yourself a lot of cash and go for a replica, in todays age its basicaly the same thing, sometimes the inner works are different, but to be honest ... who cares?, as long as it looks genuine and tells the time, nobody will know.

The reason I bought my watch was the sense of achievement and feel that comes with it. It's like wearing a nice suit, it makes you feel the part. A knock off watch will not and its purely for showcasing you are a tight arse. Having a fake is a lose/lose situation.

The amount of people we catch out at our events, attempting to be all smarmy and condescending whilst wearing fakes is highly amusing and we do let them know!

As pointed out already in the thread, your £100 replica is probably actually worth £15-20.

I can tell why they would spend a lot for a PATEK http://www.users.cloud9.net/~bradmcc/240/index.html but again you buy quality you can't see.

How can you see it there but not for a Breitling, Rolex or Omega then?

you must feel a real sense of achievement and feel really good about yourself

If he doesn't or doesn't, what's the need for the rolleyes?

he takes the mick out of people for wearing fakes, just because he has bought a real one and he's trying to say its them trying to show off and not him, its like the pot calling the kettle black

"oh your a show off with your fake watch, look its fake, but looky here i have a real one, makes me feel real good like wearing an armani suit"

I just spent a lot of money on a hoodie from christian audigier, you dont see me going up to people who wear fake designer clothes telling them that its fake and then rubbing it in their faces

It's a luxury and subjective...

Some people want to spend money on nice watches that loose very little and tell the time often less effectively than said fakes but some people want to spend £2000 on bits for their computer each year that are worth nothing the following year.

Go figure...
