Authentic watch vs Replica

I am never really going to have the disposable income to buy an expensive watch, but I do find it funny the divide between those that use the word "replica" rather than "fake". :D

I'm a watch fan.. love them.

I've got a couple of really nice watches that where bought for me at special times in my life (wedding, 21st) etc that I will treasure for life and their real value is sentimental. The resale value is also key, and (for me) ENJOYMENT.... who is anyone to tell anyone what they can and can't enjoy?

(stealth flash guy bit) I could buy lots of flash watches if I really wanted to but what's the point? I can only wear one.

For work I wear a fake Tag. The reason? I think it's a great looking watch but I'm not prepared to spend £1k on something that will get battered day in day out so I bought a £40 fake.

If you earn money you can spend it on what you want... I'm pretty sure everyone who's posted saying "what a waste of money" has gone out of their way to choose something they like over what would perform the task. then who's to say that if I like the 10k watch more than the 40p it's wrong?

Reverse snobbery!

I know it depends what you do (and what watches you have!) but I wear mine every day no matter what I'm doing or where I am and they seem none the worse for it.

Yeah I know what you mean but it's a one off thing that could happen :)

Plus, I'm not wearing the fake thinking "blimey I'm wearing a fake" I'm thinking.. hmm which watch shall I wear.. I like that one. sorted.

If you paying for the quality of the materials, design and build, then fair enough. I only own two watches and they weren't vastly expensive but I did go for quality because I really love the design and want to keep wearing them for years to come. I also like the fact some 8 year old child wasn't sitting in some factory facility in the Far East making my watch.

If you paying for the status and "to feel the part" as some have mentioned then I think you need to sit down and take a good look at yourself.

I wouldn't say all fakes are poor quality.

I could never afford the watch I wear, I don't show it off as being real but a rep if anyone asks. I wear it because I love the style.

The underside is lovely :).

Edit,

I do own an authentic Rado which is very slim.

This 47mm is for when I want something more chunky.

I missed the boat with the 1950, wanted to buy one when they came out and couldn't get one, wasn't prepared to pay grey market price but they just keep rising and rising, really wish I had bought one now

Its apparent that a lot of the posters in this thread don't know about the world of "high quality replicas". You can buy replicas in varying degrees of quality and the high end ones are very well built. There are numerous forums dedicated to them, comparing gen to rep and pointing out the flaws, or just how good the rep actually is.

Personally its not a status thing for me. Id buy a rep because I love the look of the watch but couldn't ever afford one. I don't own a rep currently but would have no problems in buying one. I don't need anyone to think I'm fancy, I just like the design of high end watches but on a poor man's budget.

The reps I am talking about by the way are not £40 flea market stall specials. Do some homework and you will see that spending a little bit more money will get you a decent watch with an an Asian 7750 High Beat movement (copy of the ETA Valjoux 7750) and depending on what brand the rep is 99% identical to the gen.

he takes the mick out of people for wearing fakes, just because he has bought a real one and he's trying to say its them trying to show off and not him, its like the pot calling the kettle black

"oh your a show off with your fake watch, look its fake, but looky here i have a real one, makes me feel real good like wearing an armani suit"

I just spent a lot of money on a hoodie from christian audigier, you dont see me going up to people who wear fake designer clothes telling them that its fake and then rubbing it in their faces
My watch means a lot to me because everytime I wear it, I do feel a sense of achievement of being able to own a nice watch.

You are confused, I don't go around hurling abuse to the ****** who wear fakes, but when they approach me at one of our events me how much money they earn etc, it's amusing that a lot of the time, they are wearing something fake, at which point I'll ask them what they are doing at our event AND wearing a fake wolox!

Doesn't matter what quality the FAKE is, it is still passing itself off as something it's not. Most of the big watch manufacturers have put well over 100 years into developing their style, movements, and brand only to have new watches faked by unscrupulous businesses benefiting from the R&D and brand recognition with their tacky knock offs.

Thankfully most of the sort of people who buy "replicas" are drawn to the tackier brands. & just becuase there are websites dedicated to replicas doesn't make them any more appealing or appropriate, there are websites dedicated to terrible acts against the animal world but that doesn't make me want to bother donkeys.

I have a fake Tag Monaco that I wear sometimes <oh the shame>

Friend of mine has a real one and the only way you can tell mine is fake is it's not heavy enough.

That entire post had nothing to do with what I was saying, well done.

How do you spot a fake? Are you a watch specialist?

Why would you wanna buy an authetic watch(rolex) costing several tousands while a good replica appears exactly the same, lasts very long and would only set you back £100-£200? I would like to see some arguments from both sides as am in the process of buying a new watch for myself.

Will be more accurate to as it'll be a quartz. :p

More so if they are buying into the idea of status and to "feel the part" and are wearing a fake and lets face it, to be wearing the fake would mean its more likely that its the case.

Why else would you want to buy into something that is aspirational and exclusive if it meant to get that meant you bought a fake. It certainly isnt for the quality, heritage, engineering etc.
