Recession.... companies making excuses!

Bah humbug, i started a new job at the start of the year and got told about how good the Christmas party was last year (open bar, etc). But it's been canned this year and just having to organise our own :(

ours is in 2 weeks and we have to pay for it ourselves, however the management are buying the drinks (out of their own pocket I believe). Ford...xmas parties....any expense not required......do not go together, especially the last few years......edit decade.

our Christmas ball got cancelled this year although that could be because last years was postpone until march.

our sales area is still having a small party on Saturday night though and the whole company is still getting a gift each

My girlfriend works for a solicitors in their conveyancing (new properties) department. They recently made 16 out of a total of 20 staff redundant due to the slowdown in house sales. It would seem they got their figures wrong and the four remaining staff are now exceptionally busy.

Anyway, she was called into a meeting with two of the company's partners (intimidation tactics?). To cut it short, they have basically asked her to work extra hours to cope with the workload, though they expect her to do this extra work for nothing!

So even though she has been working her ass off recently (with no thanks of any sort), they now expect her to work more hours for no extra pay, even though they are incredibly busy and quite obviously raking it in. No chance i'll be letting her do it though.

Oh yeah, and every year (even before this credit crunch business) the staff have to PAY to go to their own christmas party! Solicitors for you i suppose?

Profits aren't just about money, they're about investor confidence. Which for multi-million/billion dollar organisations is first priority. If they can cut corners they can make their profits look larger. Staff morale vs investor morale is an arguably an easy decision, key staff such as directors etc aren't going to be put off by losing xmas parties, all others are easily replaced. Sad but honest truth.

I'd rather not have a Christmas party than lose my job or not get paid if money is tight. Money is so tight where I am at the moment because people keep stalling on payments or not going ahead with work for whatever reason. I got half my wages on monday on time and half today which is better than it all running late like last month. We haven't had a Christmas party since 2002.

Err I'm just happy to actually be in work and I am greatful for it.

Same here, and if our Christmas do had been cancelled (it was a low-key low-cost affair as it was) I would not have been surprised or ungrateful.

Not sure I feel comfortable getting lashed up at the expense of the same company that just cut 350 jobs, it doesn't feel right.

Our xmas party was cancelled on the basis that we had laid people off and it seemed unfair to celebrate if we were saving on staff.

We have simply paid for ourselves for our xmas party - problem solved.

I'd rather lose the party than my pension.

Actually tbh i'd rather they just gave me a bottle of scotch than a party anyway :p

To be honest I never really like work parties, just because I work with people doesn't mean I want to socialise with them.

We had a christmas event for 300 people at a guildhall in London.
This lead onto an evening in a Krug champagne lounge, one of two in London.

We're having our Christmas dinner at some point in the next couple of weeks. :o
