Before i start, i apologise in advance if this is in the wrong section.

While i was at home bored today, i had ago at braiding a few Sata/Fan cables which if i do say so myself was pretty straight forward hence i decided to make a straight forward guide.

For those who like to have tidy cable managed PC like myself will appreciate this guide.

Requirements
x1 SATA Cable
x1 length (I had 1M) of 6mm Cable Braid
x1 length (Again 1M) of 13mm Heatshrink
Pair of scissors
Lighter
Hairdryer.

First off we'll start with whats needed for braiding our SATA cables

As you can see in this picture, i've cut a piece long enough to cover the SATA cable & cut two pieces of heatshrink similar size.

When You've cut the braided sleeving to your required size, it's usually a good idea to syringe both ends of the braided sleeving with a lighter so they do not fray when trying to push over the ends of the SATA cable.

Before the braided sleeving is put over the SATA cable i chose to put both the cut down heatshrinks over the braided sleeving like so

You could put the braided sleeving on first and the slide the heatshrink over, but i found it easier this way.

After that begin to slide the braided sleeving over 1 end of the SATA cable.

When approximatley half of the braided sleeving has covered the SATA cable, slide both the heatshrinks over too, like so.

When done, slide over the rest of braided sleeving as pictured below.

Move both heatsrhink pieces to each end of the SATA cable

This is where the hairdryer comes into play, once your happy with the positioning of the heatshrink, shrink it! Obviously do both ends.

Hope this guide will help someone else into doing their own braided cables as i did with mine, good luck and have fun!

Good guide :)

Just becomes a pain when the plugs are bigger, like Molex plugs. Can't be bothered to take them off :p

cool - i was thinkin about this but managed to get some black ones

good guide though
suppose you could do a few layers if you wanted it to not show the original colour

This got me thinking, cable management is a pretty big factor in aesthetics usually but with the amount of work people put into making even things like the sata cables in there rigs look nice and fitting to the theme of there case it actually becomes more aestheticly pleasing to leave some of these cables on show.

Nice tut by the way, certainly makes a big difference as 90% of the time sata cables are hardest to hide completely.

Yeah, you could use some black masking tape around the SATA cable before you actually proceed with braiding so the original colour doesn't show through.

Here is 1 of 4 Sharkoon 120mm fans i did.

Also sprayed the end connector with some matt black spray paint i had left over, gives it that stealth look.

Yeah black electrical tape would work well, but I would like to do 2 and compare I quite like the look of the red showing through the holes rather than just jet black.

Nice !

I just did it with my cable - but the heatshrink was just too big, i'll order some more and try again

Thanks.
