Firstly I absolutely LOVE this show, I'm not much of a TV fan (only watch prison break, fringe, lost and dexter) but I've never seen such a well written and entertaining show. The script is excellent, the cast is far too likeable, the story lines and subplots are brutally engaging. Great show.

Anyone aside all this, it got me thinking, is it right what Dexter is doing? Technically if he were found guilty of his crimes he would be punished ala lethal injection or via old sparky, but wouldn't this be wrong to kill a man who is only killing bad people, if ever there was such a case?

I love the show aswell its great stuff.

Imo he is OK doing that but in season 3 he kills the wrong guy and it shows us what happens when his system fails and 'the code' is broken. In Dexter's case he is pretty good at restricting himself to pretty bad people who are likely to cause harm again which I think is justified.
I wouldnt trust this to work well in real life because it is unlikely anyone would have access to the criminal records and resources that Dexter has, and a lot of it would be guess work.

ah maybe i've become my own worst enemy here _ NO SPOILERS PLEASE I've only watched up to season 2 ep 4, having said that I may not have asked this question if I had watched all the eps so far. Apologies. I was assuming he only killed bad guys throughout the multiple series :)

Thanks for the spoiler... especially as S3 is not yet being broadcast in the UK... also means this thread is highly likely to be closed now... :(

But if we could just take the question back into context and not necessarily to do with Dexter (ie. if anyone else did that in real life) what would your answer be as to whether they are a hero or villain ? :)

I personally think it's a great idea and if anything he should be rewarded :)

sorry for starting the thread - almost wish I hadn't now :(

My step daughter ruined x factor for me on sunday by saying diane got the boot!

But she is only 9 so I let her off!

you honestly didn't see that one coming?

It was obviously going to happen at some point.

i take full responsibility for starting a thread and not thinking people would spoil it - a momentary blip of stupidness :/

No I meant the actual spoiler, only surprising thing was it took 3 seasons to happen.

ah I see what you're saying, erm, yeah I guess I agree with that, they'd have to break the mould and put a few foregone twists in place to keep the audience on their toes I spose :)

He's a great guy but he's no hero.

The code is just direction for his dark passenger, which he has and will never get rid of. The thing that makes him human is his ability to understand and accept who he is, but there is nothing heroic about his motives.

He's not a villain either though.

Exactly, he's just doing the only thing he knows/believes that will stop himself from going off the rails, if you have to kill what better way to condone/justify your actions by believing your severing a nobler cause.
