Stopped by the rozzers !

I was recently with my friend in his car and we were stopped for this very reason.

However, his car (a corrado VR6), in fact all of those cars have an inherient problem in that they loose 3 odd volts from the battery to the lights which equals in poor lighting. He explained this to the policeman who actually got into his car to check his story out. He explained that he was building a loom for the lights that will help and that he had adjusted his spots to aim lower down.

The policeman said it was ok but wanted him to contact him when he has upgraded the loom and let him go.

Just doing there job and tbh, most are decent enough. But then I can't stand muppets who drive with their fogs on when its not foggy :)

On a side note, those of you without front fogs like myself, do you use dipped or main beam in fog? I was always told to use dipped as using full makes it harder to see, it just amazes me how many people use full beam!

I tend to find myself switching between sides, dipped and full trying to find out which works best for the current patch of fog, there have been times when just sidelights gives the best visibility and other times when full beam has been best and it may change as you travel.

There's no cut&dry formula for it.

If they were pulling people for fog lights in my area, there wouldn't be any cars on the round! (apart from those without fogs of coruse:D)

Where does it say I have a problem? I had my fog lights on. Don`t use them much. Forgot to turn them off. Guilty as charged.

I did not post for any other reason than to share my evenings experiences. It is a forum after all.

Jees. In future I won`t bother.

To be fair you first post does come across to me as a moan for being pulled over for something trivial, like "how dare the police suspect me of drink drinking", when they are just doing their job. Hopefully catching genuine drink drivers in their especially large net.

Sorry for going OT but I got a pull the other day on the motorway off of a normal "bobby beat" focus.

I had my GPS on that said I was doing 74mph but these guys were insistant I was doing 80 and chief plod mentioned that their speedos are calibrated so that they show the correct speed. My question is as follows:

Do normal plod cars have their speedos calibrated like the traffic police do or was he just talking mince?

AFAIK they actually use a separate device for indicating your speed? It won't be the car speedo, surely, as it'd require regular calibration which would be a PITA. It's all radar these days and is recorded on video or something like that isn't it?

I'm sure I remember reading about someone getting away with speeding a while ago because the cops didn't have it switched on in the police car... I could be talking tripe though.

I too am glad you got pulled for this. There are tons of fog light morons around here (though the full beam morons are rapidly catching up, and the misaligned headlight brigade are ever present) and I'm sick of being blinded by them on the unlit wet twisty roads we have.

Front fogs are only useful when the fog is so thick that you can't actually see the road in front of your bonnet without them. One thing that's always puzzled me is why German cars are wired such that you have to switch the front fogs on before you can use the rears, when the rears you have to switch on when visibility is down to 100ft, not 20ft like with the fronts.

I think everyone agrees that unnecessary rear fogs make you look like an idiot, so if the Germans started wiring them up to come on before the fronts we'd hopefully see an end to a lot of the front foglight abuse.

Now we just need the police to start pulling people for using rear foglights "because it's raining"

my car is german, it has independant switches for front and rear lights that i can turn on and off at will? :p

FWIW, I would trust your GPS (SatNav?). Not that it will make any difference at all if it comes down to your word against the Police :(

I own two Garmin GPS devices (GPS II & eTrex Vista HCx) and a cheap and cheerful 3½" NaviGo SY885 SatNav. At a steady speed, they all show within 1 kph of one another. At 70 mph on the SatNav, the speedo always reads high - usually by about 3 to 5 mph, depending on the car. If you were doing 74 mph, it might well show as about 80 mph on a normal speedo.

Am I the only person to not be blinded by fogs, but rather by SUVs with their normal lights or HIDs?

This ^^^

I can honestly say i've never been blinded by foglights, but have been dazzled by 4x4 headlights hundreds of times. Sure foglights are lame as hell, but they never blind me.

What i find my annoying is the people who have no lights on at all when it's getting dark/raining. Or think having sidelights (which give out about as much light as a candle) on is sufficient.

What did your speedo say? If you were in a straight line then i'd say your GPS was right and the reason you didn't get a ticket was because they were BS ing.
