A rant about ps3

TBH I like the fact you are able to freely buy a standard cable rather than an official one or something...

One thing that Sony did right was to treat the PS3 as an AV component and assume the end user would be happy to purchase the cables they require to the standards they want. Its a trend you see when setting up your own AV equipment, I dont see people complaining there?...

Every console Ive had Ive had to buy one cable or another - just like you end up having to buy a second controller - pretty automatic for me to cost that in for the purchase. If I got an X360 elite theres a good chance Id buy a HDMI cable for it too (Ive got spares :p)...

ps3ud0
Whilst I agree with your point, I bet most users will not realise they need to buy a HDMI cable and never truly experience the HD goodness.

This is sadly true, if I got a £1 from people asking me at work as to what the cable is and if it will make the picture better I wouldn't need to work!

However, whilst it does make good business sense to not supply all of the customers with a HDMI cable it would have been nice to, considering a majority of the people that got one on release day would have probably had a HDTV to start with, so a £5 cable would have made a lot of people happy. It's crazy people will spend £400 on a console but as soon as they find out that it don't come with the cables they are soon put off buying one in the first place.

ahhh..

it doesnt bother me in the slightest buying cables for consoles... not an issue at all imo. If only it were as simple as just buying cables and plugging em in ehh ;)

I have bought my bro the GOW limited edition 60GB xbox 360 for xmas. That doesn't come with a HDMI cable as far as I know, but he doesn't have a HDTV anyway (just my nice 32" toshiba I sold him years ago :D).

If Sony got HDMI cables for a quid. Thats 16 million pound they have saved not implementing them.

This saving, amongst others, is passed on to the consumer in the form of a PS3 better priced, even use to be cheaper, than stand alone Blu-ray players.

People also like a choice.

but that will have a HD capable component wire.

The ps3 out the box is an SD console which is mad.

this the exact argument 360 fanboys use to justify why the 360 doesnt have wireless out the box, now its being turned around for the ps3 ?

Annoying part is you don't need wireless to enjoy the console properly but if your playing in SD on a HD setup it's going to look awful.

I do think it's a bit silly to not include a HD cable in the box, i went over to a friends house and he had his PS3 hooked up to a 40" HDTV via composite and was totally oblivious. Needless to say, it looked terrible.

All that aside, to the op, saying you're unwilling to play any shooters on the console is limiting yourself significantly. I can see why you would want to play all multiplatform shooters on your (rather good) PC, but by cutting out on exclusive shooters too you're missing out on Uncharted, Warhawk and Resistance 2, three of my favorite games on the PS3.

My recommendations would be:

Uncharted
Resistance 2
Little Big Planet
Metal Gear Solid 4
Burnout Paradise
Super Stardust HD
Wipeout HD
Warhawk

Your average joe probably isnt as down with HD, SD, HDMI, etc as most people here are. It would be better with a HDMI cable definitely, but it was never an issue with me as theyre a fiver, as opposed to £50 for a wireless adapter.

Looks better than PS2 in SD, just. Average joe wouldnt know what a HDMI cable was if it was included. Average joe is probably connecting it to an non HD TV anyway, average joe would probably still use composite even if he did have a HDTV.

Its not about the money, its the fact that they make you buy a cable ontop of the £200+ system you already bought (thats including the 360).

what about the added stuff in the ps3 you dont get in the 360 - like Wireless and a hdd

you also have to see that hdmi enabled tellies are also a tiny fraction of whats out there, so there is no way its a "standard" connection yet, so why bundle it?

I think you need to give "Average Joe" a bit more credit. The average HDTV buyer isn't as thick as you seem to make out.

I know loads of people that you'd class as Mr Joe, and almost all of them would research what they were buying and needed before spending cash loads on a new TV.

Spot on. They provide a cable that will work on all TVs (composite). If you're TV supports it, go and spend a fiver on a HDMI cable. I'm fairly certain the PS3/Xbox manuals explain the different available connections.

I think we are reading into this more than just a way for Sony to save a bit of money, though I do agree that if the average person already had a HDTV they would have the nonce to work out that supplied cabling wouldnt give them the best connection.

I know we dont read manuals, but its also quite simply shown in the manual what connection gives you the best picture pretty much straight from the off...

I just cant accept that there are people out there with PS3s connected to a HDTV using a SD connection method because they dont know better...

/cue examples :p

Glad you said that! As i said previously, mate with a 40" HDTV and a 60gig PS3 so much better kit than i can afford and the dolt was using the supplied composite cable!

Really annoyed me that did, painful to see someone with over £1ks worth of kit connected with a 50p cable.

Average joe wouldnt know what resolution and frequency a cable carries by essentially judging the connector. A cable is a cable to a lot of people, a lot of people go by whether it fits or not lol.

Theres no way in hell most of my mates (even HDTV owners) and ALL my family would understand what HDMI was and the alike.
