T-mobile G1 – The first of the Google Android Phones. A Review

So how easy would it be to get a Vodafone contract sim working in a G1? Whats required to network unlock this thing?

Worth flogging an N95 8GB to fund one of these??

You need to install custom firmware I think. Got really no idea on this myself though. Perhaps someone else could shed some light.
Thanks for the info Tobes... wonder if anyone knows, is flash for the web browser currently being worked on? thanks!
Yes it is. Nearly done I think. Adobe have showed it off already. Wasn't that smooth but I think they just wanted to show that they are working on it and it's happening.

I couldn't get the G1 to detect my wireless network until I changed the wireless channel to 2417 MHz. Since then it connect immediately with good signal strength and no drop outs. So far battery life hasn't been that bad - I'm getting more than a day out of it on a full charge.

why is the G1 so much cheaper on tarriffs than the x1 and hd for example? Surely it packs just as much of a punch albeit in different ways?

£20 a month including web n walk - and 100 quid for the phone is cheaper than mobiles or mobilephonesdirect tarriffs . hd on mobiles is 25 minimum and 100 for the phone etc. :o

really tempted by the price, but after a winmo fone for office sync :/

Been reading some forums and T Mobile employees seem to think Exchange support is coming very soon. Dunno if that helps.

Because the handset costs a lot less to produce.

My G1 is coming tommorow, can't wait - will be my first smart phone ever :D

(although had use of a vario II works one for a couple of months a few years ago)

Mine arrived this morning, unlocked it for vodafone...blinkin love it!!!

As i understand it i wont receive over the air updates due to not being on T-mobile. Any ideas how i can find out what version of the software is on mine and how i can update manually if necessary?

EDIT: Ignore the above, got it sussed.

I just got off the phone with TM renewals/upgrades, I am on Flet 25 + W&W costing £32.50pm and my contract is ending this month. I was only interested in the N96 but TM want me to pay £150 just for the phone! They did offer me the G1 on any other package pretty much but I wan't interested until I found this thread.

Can anyone honestly compare the G1 with the N96? I like what I have read about the OS and I always use gmail and google calendar - but I suppose I can use that on any phone. I have read in this thread that the camera is rubbish but how rubbish? I haven't checked the specs, going to do that now. I currently have a SE K800 and the camera is ok.

Thanks

You probably know now, but I've got mine unlocked on o2 and get the OTA updates no probs. They come from Google and not the operator.

YEY! Finally got another G1. No 8gb card though... but I kept my last one anyway :D

Taking pics of all the stuff that it comes with. Also going to install custom firmware so I'm safe should something amazing come from the scene.

Tobes, can you give details on the custom f/w? I thought we were only on something like RC8 but America is much higher... Is it advisable to put the American software on? Also, is it possible to revert back to the original if necessary? Any risks? What are the advantages? Any links and/or help appreciated.

Also looking forward to any pics.

Cheers.

America models are on the same firmware. Custom firmware has features which developers and other people can use to gain more access. It's not custom in the sense that it has loads of cool features for us to use. I think the software is all the same but it alters itself when it knows it's a US or UK handset. Not sure on this yet.

As long as you haven't got RC30 (when you turn on the phone for the first time you are asked if you wish to upgrade) then you can use custom firmware because of the root hack. It is possible to downgrade or install the proper RC30 once you have installed custom firmware.

Not sure on risks or advantages yet. Still reading up.
