As any one here who frequently uses the London Underground knows, there's a "lovely" fine black dust that seems to coat everything (and is extra lovely when you get home and blow you nose, only to discover you're actually carrying about 1lb of it up there!)

Anyway i'm slightly curious as to what the hell it actually is.... I guess it could just be 'normal dust' (i.e. dead skin etc... ew) plus brick dust from the tunnels and other bits... but i've also read that (apparently) it's actually fine metal grindings, from where the wheels grind away at the track!?

Anyway - anyone have any ideas?

well, its probably all of the above, plus a healthy amount of particulate carbon.

frickin' HATE the stuff!

Possibly brake dust too, I seem to remember visiting a train yard open day as a kid and they have huge brakes, which makes sense if you're trying to stop a few hundred tons rolling past a platform.
I'd also guess that huge brakes create huge amounts of dust too.

When i used to visit 'sk8 extreme', newports indoor skate park a lot back in the day, after a good few hours in there you'd get the same thing. Nice film of black dust all over you and black snot, lovely :D

brake dust and general dirt (skin etc).

If you think it's bad on the trains and in the stations, you don't want to know how thick it is in the tunnels.. The Underground network is a century old in places, and the tunnels have *never* been cleaned.

Well they must have cleaned the bit they used in spooks this week, they were all spotless after running around in there!

PK!

I work on the cctv, so I spend most my time replacing camera's the stuff ruins, its mainly brake dust, dead skin, that sort of thing, its not the nicest thing in the world to be covered in (ive seen people come out black head to toe after opening a panel on the platforms).

Bakerloo is the worst for it (I swear theres a bloody coal factory at each end!)
