Those who thought LighterLife was dangerous, here's your proof

I know there's a guy on this forum who's doing this diet, and we all told him he was insane at the time. 530 calories a day is nuts.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/health/article5327606.ece

A mother of five died after drinking too much water three weeks after she had begun a water-based diet in an attempt to lose weight, an inquest was told.

Jacqueline Henson, 40, was determined to slim down from 14st (89kg) and was “over the moon” after losing nearly 12lb (5.4kg) in one week after starting the LighterLife diet plan, Huddersfield Coroner’s Court was told yesterday.

The LighterLife diet, which has been linked with water poisoning, hair loss and disrupting the menstrual cycle, suggests that only 530 calories should be consumed a day for a period of 12 weeks, and drinking four litres of water per day.

Tbh, this merely proves that drinking 4 litres of water in 2 hours is potentially fatal.

I think the diet itself is a bit of a nutty fad, but it seems clear that this lady did not follow instructions.

Very sad story.

:(

Natural selection tbh.

It's well known that drinking too much water drains your body of salts and minerals it needs (I'm sure someone will put it better than that but you know what I mean!)

It was me doing that diet. I've lost four stone and now moved on to weightwatchers online to maintain over christmas and lose another stone.

She was clearly drinking too much water in too short a space of time. Clearly four litres in two hours is ridiculous, they say to space it over the day, drinking around a pint an hour. They warn of water poisoning time and time again as dehydration/overhydration are very dangerous.

I can't see why I was 'insane' for doing the diet, I managed to stick to it 100 percent for 12 weeks, not kill myself in the process and I'm healthier than happier i've been for over a decade.

Some people get it into their heads that it is the water they drink that helps weight come off quicker to they assume that if they drink more, they loose more.

It's not lighterlife's fault, it's the tragic lady in question.

I have my own problems with the diet, or namely the 'counseling' that I never received, but thats a different story.

Bottom line is it does work, its not dangerous unless you are that 0.01% who choose to ignore the guidelines. It's even medically monitored by the GP! If you weren't on the diet and drank 4 litres in two hours it'd do you damage too!

Probably didn't go to the toilet or something silly.

Do you not eat or something on this diet then? Cause there isn't much wrong with consuming 4 litres of water....in two hours maybe...

This reminds me of that "Wii wee" competition for some reason.

True, but it's not like the diet doesn't encourage it. This lady was clearly overjoyed at losing nearly a stone in a week [which is ridiculous in itself] but, not understanding how the body works, she got overkeen.

This diet is awful on a number of levels, one of the worst being that it doesn't encourage lifestyle change.

Somebody needs to get a large stick and beat women (and men) with it until they get the message:

There is not quick fix diets. Healthy eating + less calories in than out + plenty of exercise = weight loss.

That's it. No stupid cabbage soup diets, no stupid GI diets, no stupid LighterLife diet.

If only people listened properly :(

It's not that easy to get into peoples head for some reason.

The reason is that proper dieting is hard, damn hard. You have to have the willpower to stick to eating healthy, eating less and doing exercise. Never-mind having the patience as you don't lose weight fast.

Instead just like in many other areas of life they want a quick fix and somehow think losing stones in week is healthy. Pay more attention in biology class dimwits.

What are your other problems with it? I personally wouldn't go on a diet which includes counselling as a staple.

I did my own diet about a year ago and lost 4 stone over 5 months just by counting calories. Well done for doing yours though - but 530 kcal a day is dreadful, I'm surprised you didn't get depressed.

The whole point of the diet is to encourage lifestyle change. It's incredibly well structured. Please don't jump to conclusions like that about it because it's simply not the case.

The diet doesn't encourage drowning by drinking at all. Christ if you had four litres of tea in two hours you'd die.

Or Vodca for that matter.

I'm kinda taking that personally! :p

It does work, and works well and safely if you stick to it properly. It's clearly an extreme way of doing things, but if you follow it by the letter it's fine.

My other problem with the lack of counseling is that I had books coming out of my ears but I was paying for sessions to include CBT etc and they rarely happened. Now I lost the weight, but it did get to the point where eventually, I couldn't mentally cope without eating with my family etc so I ended up stopping earlier than I would've liked. If I had been given the tools to handle my emotions, as I should've been, this wouldn't have been the case (maybe)

However, this is down to my individual lighter life counsellor, rather than the diet as a whole.

There's no way I could do a diet like that, food is one of lifes treasures. I adour food, I'd get so depressed without it

The whole diet just sounds terrible to me. You get to ingest slushy 'nutrient' packs for three months and drink water? Good God. Unless you're a troglodyte living off algae and moss you shouldn't be doing something like that out of choice. You've got teeth for a reason.

Anyway it's over now, for you at least. I hope you don't ever get back on it. Glad to hear you're eating properly.

Oh I agree it's not fun. However, it's about a million times more preferable to weighing twenty stone again.

Just in case people didn't see my story, I have a diet blog at http://slimmersean.wordpress.com where I detailed my experiences with Lighterlife.

Take it anyway you want, it's fact. Science doesn't lie. :p

I'll say it again: The only way to lose weight in a healthy, controlled way and to keep the weight off is to eat a balanced diet, use more calories than you consume and have at least thirty minuets of exercise a day..

Anything else is just marketing bumpf.

One day I'm going to make a diet DVD and hype it to death until release. When people put it in the player it'll just display the line "calories out > calories in" for 90 minutes.
