Have a bet - computer dead or not?

Well, my liquid cooled PC sprang a leak about 5 days ago. Here is the order of events

1) Computer crashed for first time ever
2) Tried to restart. About 10 seconds into reboot it crashed.
3) Looked into see through window on side and it looks like someone has sneezed onto the window - see about a total of 3cm squared of liquid (at that point) come out of the leak. On seeing liquid where it souldn't be I squeal like a girl, and immediately disconnect power.
4) The computer had been leaking for an unknown period of time before for some reason the thing started crashing (overheating? shorting?). It's never crashed for months before, so this was the reason...
5) Lifted up the PC and put it in the bath. The small judder as it hits the bath causes the seal which was cracked and leaking to break off altogether. At this point distilled water suddenly literally LEAKS ALL OVER THE PLACE :( --the graphics card and motherboard, drenches the 2nd graphics card and pours out of small case gaps. The whole reservoir empties, viea the pipe between it and the NB, all over the shop. Luckily it missed the hard disk but the inside of the thing is now a wet, soggy mess :( A small amount goes into the power supply. Remember no power anywhere near the comp at this point, and wasn't going into the comp when the 'wet explosion of horror' occurred.
6) I weep, again somewhat like a little girl with pigtails, over the sodden wet mess of computer components in the bath in front of me :( Looking a bit like the scene at the end of 'planet of the apes' when he realises he IS on earth! 'Nooooooooooooooo'!
7) Computer gets left alone by me for 5 days in dry warm room .. hopefully enough for all the water to evaporate. I then open it and all surfaces feel bone dry and there is no visible sign water was ever there ...
8) I have fixed the leak -- and tomorrow night am refilling, and flicking the power switch.

So -- take your bets ladies and gentlemen. Who thinks the computer will be unharmed? Who thinks the graphics cards will be shot but the rest OK? Who thinks the whole thing will be completely screwed :(

Lose the swear dude or take a holiday from the forums :)

I reckon you will be fine, no power to anything and left to dry for 5 days to dry out

This is my worst nightmare, going to be building a water cooled rig when I get the parts for xmas, however as stated no power was going through the PC at explosion point so I think you should be OK. *touch wood*

You should be ok as distilled water is not conductive so it shouldnt have shorted out unless it was contaminated which i doubt. good luck wait till its totally dry

Best thing to do is to, as above, use a hairdryer. But since there might be a few drops of water in it still, sit in the bath and do it. Might as well have a bath at the same time, kill 2 birds with one stone.

So run a bath, and use the hair dryer in it. Also, run with scissors.

:D
I presume in order to real-time see if the PC is working I should keep it turned on whilst I'm in the bath with it and the hairdryer? Also to stop me getting cold, surely a 3-bar heater in there as well wouldn't go astray?

Astray? Did you mean ashtray? I find packing foam makes a good ashtray.

With most of the jazz people put in there water (Dyes, Anti-algee etc) it becomes far from unconductive. ;)

Back to topic, you will be fine! 5 days should have dried everything out. Check under heatsinks on parts for any water though!

Why don't you test it with a normal HSF FIRST!!??

What's the point in building your loop back up only to find its knackered?

For me it'd take longer to switch to air cooling than to refit my WC after removing it. Might be the same for him. I guess it depends on what you have blocks on.

The whole of the loop is already in there and perfect and been working for months apart from 1, single, plastic bit that snapped. I don't need to take anything out of the case to fix this thing, just take the snapped connector thing out, replace it, tighten up the jubilee clips, then slide 5 1/4 inch reservoir bay forward a little to get to the refill thingy and that should be it! No need for anything more drastic (hopefully).
:D

The (only) bit that broke that needed replacing :

Anyway, if no post on this board from me by midnight tonight it means I'm at home and my PC is truly bust .. and I'll write on Monday!

I'll let you know. Excited now -- but will be gutted if it goes 'pop'.

incidentally I have processor and NB and graphics card #1 and graphics card 2 on my loop ..

Oh dear, linky to competitors website.
You really are asking to be suspended my man!

I think you will be fine as long as its properly dried. I would get the hairdryer in there to winkle out the bits that wont dry between parts.

I to had a small drip in my loop, distilled water, dye, anti algi stuff, and it was fine, but then it was a small drip and not a gusher like you had!!

I am putting my money on it working :)

Oh dear. I do sympathise here a lot, although it's never happened to me. Used two full W/C systems and luckily never had a leak that mattered :D

7/16ths tubing and zip ties == Win :D

Edit: My money is on your system works if you inspect closely enough (personally I would be pulling everything off that is even remotely detachable and getting the hair dryer out!).

Oops, that's a bad day. I genuinely think it will all run ok, as long as everything has dried out properly.

The only worry is with your first "sneeze" scenario and whether that has caused any damage.

I'd say there is an 84.6% chance everything will work ok.

Well, FANTASTIC news .. the PC appears (touch wood) to be 100% perfect.

So, you are all correct. You can not underestimate my sense of relief. One of the cornerstones of my thinking has always been 'water inside a PC = knackered PC'. Now I know this is not necessarily the case (especially if distilled water).

My advice to anyone that has a 'gusher' is to NOT panic .. give the PC a full week in a warm, dry room unplugged -- and then a going over with a hairdryer (not sure if it did any good -- but it takes what 5 minutes!).

I am in such a good mood it's quite unbelievable. The insides were simply a SODDEN, DRIPPING WET including inside the powersupply. They were saturated with water from the system I was in mourning for my pc's death. And now -- I'm back. 100% perfect with 1 99p item bought and replaced (and 6.99 of new water)!.Awesome!
