Nicely specced hatch for 3k.

I'm having a bit of a mental block here. A mate is looking for a hatch (no room for budging on that one!) for around 3k. Wants all the trimmings; PAS, leather, remote central locking, climate control etc. Dosent need to be quick, but don't dangerously underpowered. 1.4 - 1.6 litre should do the job.

Focus Ghia
Audi A3

Only things I can think of? Any other ideas? Anything that would fit the bill for less than 3k would be even better.

Any of the hatches mentioned so far would be "dangerously underpowered" with a 1.4, and borderline with a 1.6.

But yes, Leon/Golf/A3 1.8, 1.8T or 1.9TDi would do the job. A3 you pay a premium, Golf has a worse interior, and you'll get a newer Leon for the cash. I'd take the Leon or A3 out of the three.

a friend has a golf 1.4, and tbh it's not THAT bad. you just have to drive everywhere with your foot on the floor, thereby using lots of petrol..

oh, wait..
i agree with ^

Why does your mate want leather? Does he not realise how hideous VAG leather (particularly the A3 leather) looks at this price point? More wrinkles than a granny that's been soaking in a hot tub for a few hours!

For 3k surely the best option is a 1.6 focus ghia?

Assuming you want an interior designed by Tomy for that "my first dashboard" look.

And well, if Mr MarkVAGHaterDavis can say his peice about VAG quality leather, surely the plasicated junk Ford call leather that they put in the focus must be questioned also?

BTW, if he's going to be looking at A3s with leather and he's going to carrying passengers in the back, its not a pleasant experience for them because they tend to slide around slightly on the leather when going round bends. Probably due to the combination of rubbish shaped seats and slippery leather.

Better to look at A3s with that silky material covered seats that Audi do (looks better with age too compared to leather): http://pictures.autotrader.co.uk/imgser-uk/servlet/media?id=827358915

Ignore the above, the leather is fine on the rear bench, but (as was said in his previous post) it doesn't age well if not looked after.

The faux vulgarlour seats are quite simply vile.

Surely a nice mondeo Ghia fits into this category of hatch under 3k definitely not woefully underpowered and has all the trimmings he requires.

BMW Compact?

Well built, should be able to find one with plenty of options ticked, and its RWD.

Personally, I hate them mind you!

Are the e46 ones under £3k now? If they are, then its not a bad call (well, I don't mind the 325ti :p). But I wouldn't want an e36 based one, the interiors are just grim, and the rear end is... quirky.

Sorry, Ignore the leather bit. So, just out of interest, out of a A focus, leon, golf, a3. What would give you the most car for the money at around 2-3k? Was just speaking to him at work and I think he's dead set on an A3 to tell you the truth but I'm just curious now myself!

Found quite a few A3s for that kinda price but the mileage is around 100k. If looked after do they last? Not that 100k phases me at all, 150k on the clock of the golf and its fine. (ish!)

The Leon will give you considerably more value for money than the Golf or A3. will be a close call between the Leon and the Focus, but for me, the Focus loses out due to its quirky styling (mainly interior).

Possibly at a push, the e36 variants are well under £3k.

I kind of like the e36 variant, it has a lot of e30 bits!
