The Nokia E71 thread

No I get auto-directed to the mobile site. The links are to ram files hence the launching of RealPlayer.

Should I try Opera? Is the free one good enough to use for most everything?
You get directed to the mobile version but then you just click on the link at the bottom for the desktop version.

I found that I downloaded Opera, and it just did almost exactly the same things as the embedded one, so uninstalled it again.

I may have missed some finer details but TBH I prefer the text-entry on the Nokia browser (Opera always seems to jump me out into a separate text editor when I hit 'return' in a text box, so I always had to find a 'submit' button on the page somewhere or I was stuffed).

I noticed the YouTube desktop version link a little while ago. It crashed the browser after clicking search button.

Well I've not had any problems with other websites... just youtube.

If I install Opera as an alternative is it easy to switch between the two browsers? Cause I like the Nokia browser in general.

Yeah nothing stopping you having both installed! You can stick a shortcut to either wherever you see fit :)
Ok good, I think I'll at least try it. The Nokia browser is really good though... not at all clunky and awkward like many phone apps tends to be.

One thing about RealPlayer just occured to me. I've been doing this browsing via wlan (the Data portion of my phone account has not been processed yet). So since RealPlayer is attempting the connect via a NAT router, could that be the issue with timing out? Might RealPlayer prefer a port to be forwarded or something?

I have to say that I prefer the mobile version of youtube on the phone. The desktop one is way too "busy" for phone browsing.

Just tried YouTube (mobile version) with my phone's own data connection instead of wlan (my Data account got processed finally).

YouTube works fine now via the native browser... RealPlayer gives no problems.

I looked in the phone's RealPlayer settings and noticed "low" and "high" settings for UDP ports which define a huge range. So in other words ALL those UDP ports have to be open for incoming connections. Hence the reason why my NAT router via wlan was getting in the way.

I like watching the vids of kittens and puppies. Now I can enjoy them on my E71

Woo. I am getting this in January :)

Three allow a free upgrade. Are the keys nice to type on?
The keyboard is surprisingly easy to use. You'd think that you'd need to use your nails or finger tip edges, but you can actually use your finger tips as you would on much larger keys because of the curvature on the keys. I even use my thumbs. Obviously normal dexterity and feeling in fingers is a necessity with this phone.

I've written about half the posts in this thread via my E71. I'm happy doing emails and posting in forums on my E71 in the absence of a desk/lap-top.

The phone is very thin. Plenty small enough and thin enough to keep in your pocket all day with no discomfort. I'm not the type to wear tight fitting clothes, so I can't speak for those.

And it's a very solid feeling phone... pretty much all metal except for keys and screen. Nothing feels loose on it. Nice to have a gadget that's not plasticy. The grey steel model is a good looker too.

Same! Every now and then if I'm paying too much attention I try typing with my nails and of course that gets annoying - until I realise it works fine with my thumbpads :)

Also! I know you wouldn't think predictive text was needed on a qwerty phone - however I've just turned on predictive and upped the error correction to High, and my goodness! Just did a test text and properly mashed the keypad, hit wrong keys purposefully, even getting several wrong inside one word occasionally - and it flawlessly picked the right word! Brilliant!

Good phones come to those who wait :)

Just made me think, regarding the build quality of this phone: whenever it comes time to upgrade to a better feature set - after getting used to this - I'll be reluctant to trade this for anything more flimsy (ed: "anything less solid" I should say)

true true.. definately worth waiting for from what ive played with :p

the only thing i felt that was a bit flimsy on this phone was the little mechanism to get the back panel off to put the battery in. also, getting the sim card out was a bit of a pickle. other than that its a well built phone

Hadn't thought of that (and I've only opened the back cover once thus far), but as I recall the locking mechanism could be better built. It does however hold the back cover down firmly... so you do not get the dreaded jiggly back cover with this.

indeed. :) i had to open it twice to get my sim and battery in and then the sim and batery out. but it obviously wont be a problem as i dont need to switch the sim over at all. im glad i chose this one. got it for a steal, sim free £235 :)

I've just come from a N95 8GB and I know the N95 has a better camera but the one in the E71 is rubbish, anyone else find this ? I thought 3.2MP would not be that bad ?

In all the reviews I read, the camera is either in the "cons" column or it's stated as just being "good enough for a phone, but not great"... and always because they expected the camera to be better.

I think that's one reason this phone is not more expensive. Which is fine for me, because the camera is not that important to me. I like the phone camera/video only for capturing those unexpected moments (dog starts break dancing, etc).

It's OK. I haven't tested it that much, but in good lighting you get sharp images and the flash is ok.

i think the phone is intended for business first, play layer. thats why the cam is only 3.2mp i believe. and thats also to keep the price below the blackberry's etc.

Is there any other browser bar Opera Mini? I also had this on my N95 and despite being very slick and better than Nokias as it does not reload the page when you go back........but Nokia browser seems to get a better connection for some reason?
