Hi guys,

Just been given a laptop by a friend to look at because it's stopped loading xp...

It gets to the windows 'welcome' screen and reveals the blue of the background, but after that it just seems to stall? After about 10mins i could ctl+alt+del and bring up task manger then shut down the machine properly, but that's it :( It never gets as far as showing any of the desktop shortcuts etc.

Safe mode is the same; i get the black screen with the white text at the top/bottom, but then it all seems to stall.

I'm suspecting spyware :)

Any ideas?

SW.

Use an XP install CD to get into the recovery console and run chkdsk /r as a start point, if that doesn't work let us know.

Thanks mate, did that. And it found 'one or more problems'

The problem remains tho :(

What next?

Hello mate!

Yeah, it does, but I think /r generally repairs them doesn't it? /r has got me out of a lot of scrapes in the past ;)

I think /f usually works quite well too; I might try that later, or is that an 'in-Windows only' command? I might have to dig out one of my windows guides in a bit  :D

Sorry forgot to add, it's worth either running chkdsk a couple of times or running the drive diagnostic test from the drive maker and do a health test on it to check that the drive isn't dying.

Is it possible explorer is not loading? When you C+A+D can u see explorer.exe running as a process?
No option to format and reinstall?

Good point, having just re-read the OP he can get to task manager, so manually loading explorer should get him into windows.

Task Manager > File > New Task > Browse to windows and locate Explorer.exe

If your unable to find "explorer.exe" open up cmd via the task manager and type sfc /scannow sometimes helps.

If its finding Chkdsk errors then you need to repair it with the XP disc. It maybe the cause though that its to damaged to repair and needs a format.

Thanks, manually loading explorer.exe gets me into windows, but when i eventually get there it's a mess!

Seems to be all down to my mate installing 'Antivirus 2009' from the web after her norton 360 subscription ran out... It's installed loads of crap that's preventing me from; system restore, connecting to a wired/wireless network, installing avg, using disk defrag - the list goes on

Spybot won't install because i can't connect to the net for the updates - it's a nightmare (for me!).

I've managed to uninstall AV 2009 and remove a few of the startup items; harupeza, losorede and qntvtzuusbchere, but they just appear the next time you reboot.

I'll see her tomorrow and break the news :p

Rebuild it is then...

AV2009 is malware, try malwarebytes antimalware to remove it.
Yeah, I tried malwarebytes - wouldn't let me scan tho because I wasn't/couldn't connect to the web for updates :o

Format/fresh install is going to be the easiest option!

Cheers guys.

Yep. Safe Mode is slightly quicker loading responding etc, but the problems are still there...
