What other good ones are there?

I've seen :

The Pianist - Excellent moving film.
Enemy of the Gates - ok
Band of Brothers - Not a film but very moving all the same. Great score.
Saving Private Ryan - ok

I can't think of any others atm.

Not WWII (it's set during the Korean war), but I'd definitely recommend Brotherhood [taegukgi]. In fact, I just bought the dvd today for £5 after losing my first. If you're after a moving war film, this is it.

The Longest Day, very good, full of famous actors.

Kelly's Heroes is one of my all time favourite war films, I love the part Donald Sutherland plays.

Apocalypse Now is one you'll have to watch if you're a war movie fan. The helicopter sequence is amazing.

Edit: Apocalypse now is Vietnam, still a good film though.

Glad to see you've watched BoB now after saying in a previous thread that you didn't think it was your cup of tea. :)

To be honest I don't think it can be bettered, imo it's the best war film/series out of the lot, and recent too.

Another one worth mentioning would be Cross Of Iron, although not recent. It looks at the war from a Germans (James Coburn) point of view.

A good sea battle one would be Battle of Midway - loads of good actors and plenty of decent action.

What about Schindlers List, not so much action but definitely needs watching if you haven't watched it.

The Thin Red Line is good, as mentioned - I seem to remember that not going down well but I thought it was definitely worth a watch.

I've found that a lot of fantastic films often don't get the recognition they deserve. Let's take The Fountain for example -- an excellent thought provoking masterpiece but many didn't 'get' it. The main problem I think TTRL had was that it was heavily over-shadowed by Saving Private Ryan when it first came out.

Downfall.

You know the Hitler skit where he's ranting about getting banned from xbox live? That film is Downfall. And it's really good (though hardly any action, it takes place in Hitlers bunker during his last days).
