No particular budget, but just after the best 42-46" TV.

Requirements;

3 HDMI
PC Input
1080p
Wireless (if possible)

Will be used for Xbox360, BluRay, Browsing, Sky HD etc.

The wireless isn't essential, as whatever is saved on the TV will be spent on a HTPC.

Budget at a random number up to £1800 or so. But if i can get a good LCD/Plasma for less, then that's fine too!

Not sure whether Plasma or LCD?

Thanks for any input :).

Looking at the SONY KDL40W4500 and the Samsung LE40A686.

The sony has the wireless port, whereas the Samsung doesn't.

They come in at about £830 (Samsung) and £930 (Sony).

Which one would you go for?

Which ever one has the best picture. A tv IMO should be about the picture quality / any other feature is secondary, and with a fixed price, extra gadgets and features could be viewed as a detriment to the picture quality. Personally I would suggest checking out plasma screens over LCDs, and this puts you firmly in Panny PZ series plasmas.

You can probably get a Pionneer for that budget (£1800), which is pretty decent.

Alternatively split the budget and get a TV / projectore set up... £1800 is quite a lot when decent sets cost £7-800 thesedays.

That's quite strange. I thought all men were programmed to want a TV that is too big for what it's needed for.

You could get a 50" and tell him you could have swore you ordered the 46". It means you get left out of any shopping in the future but with a 50" TV, who's complaining.

Well it'd be something 4ft wide on the wall.. I wouldn't mind, but we have a 32" and its slightly too small. The mother doesn't want it to overbear the room, which the 50" would anyway.

Edit: anyone got the link where it tells you the size TV you should go for depending on viewing distance?

Edit 2: What HiFi and a few other calculators etc say at about 2.8m you should be looking at 40-42", we sit about 8ish feet away. So think we'll go for a 42".

List atm;

40"

Sony KDL40W4500
Samsung LE40A686
Toshiba 40ZF355D

42"

Philips 42PFL7603
Panasonic Viera TH42PZ800

Which of those?

Well not sure where you are getting your figures from, but the difference in WIDTH between a 46" and a 50" is a mere 2.6" (and potentially NOTHING if the 46 has a wide bezel and the 50 has a narrow bezel!, the screen is 32 inch wide which leaves 16 inches for a bezel in your calcs for a width of 4 feet!)

And I don't think I ever heard anyone NOT say they wish they went for a 50 after getting a 42... . Especially coming from a smaller screen.

however . If you are just listing TVs and asking us to pick one, personally I would pick a 42PZ series

EDIT - the numbers were puzzling me and I just realised - you know that you measure a TV size by it's DIAGONAL length? Not the width - i.e. a 50" is not 4ft 2" wide... it's 32.5" wide, 50" diagonally... And note that you can't directly compare widescreen with non-widescreen diagonal measurements.

After searching various forums today especially AV, the Sony KDL40W4500 has got some serious mixed reviews. It seems to be the case that you might get a good one or you get a bad one but from what I see there seems to be more bad ones than good one's.

Yes, and i'm going by the dimensions that is is wide, not diagonally, so we know how wide it is on the wall. I know that you measure diagonally, i was saying that its that wide as it would be on the wall.

How? Unless the bezel is 8 inch wide on each side?

Yeah woop. My bad. I messed up the calcs.. it's not 32 inch its 43inch, which is 2.5 each size for the bezl to give 4 feet....

I think James.miller on here had one. But he replaced it with a PZ and said the difference was night and day.

Panasonic PZ is awesome. But if your budget is £1800 or so then get the 5090, honestly the Pioneers are just stunning. Once you've seen one you'll accidentally buy it anyway so all this is pointless - get down to your local Sevenoaks / John Lewis now :p

Don't be a silly wussy, a 50" TV isn't 4" wider than a 46" and the Pioneer probably has a smaller bezel anyway, I'm 90% sure the Pioneers are more compact than the Panasonics judging by the Panasonic I have and the Kuro I'm sat in front of right now. It's got a much cleaner design than the PZs so seems smaller even if it isn't. Only when it's on though...when it's off it's like a big black hole :p
