What company is next to go bust?

Somerfield is more a convenience supermarket, we have one in the village and the nearest Tesco/Asda is 5 miles away so its ok for picking things up.

You really cant compare the buying power of Asda-Walmart to Somerfield.

paying nearly 3x as much is not buying power, its simply a case of somerfield truly ripping the customer off. seriously they used to sell these in aldi for less than 50p.

so its either, a bad buying on behalf of the somerfield buying team, b, price gouge, they have nowhere else to go so im going to screw em for an extra 100% cash margin out of it.

whichever way, id still like to see it all end. im not even going to discuss their tropicana pricing strategy its too aweful.

Trust me you will.

You will end up paying more taxes to fund the people on JSA

Plus shops will put up prices as competition becomes scarce.

But don't you think that it's inedible that these stores will eventually go under anyway in the future due to the way we are seeing shopping habits evolve by way of more people wising up and choosing to shop on-line, and also more people than ever are becoming more knowledgeable about technology these days at an exponential rate, for example at my local school my little brothers are taught how to build and repair PC's as part of their curriculum, and not only that I've even meet a few tech savvy mums in the past that have even built system's themselves from reading guides on the internet in a bid to save money,

You would have never even dreamt of this a decade ago, times are changing, and with it technology is evolving, millions of people have lost their jobs in the past, farming, the cotton mills, the mining pits, the hundreds/thousands of factory's that closed at the end of the first great industrial revolution, and then the same at the end of the second great industrial revolution, it's all part and parcel of the industrial evolution, as technology changes and evolves one industry dies and another is eventually born,

We as human beings are becoming more intelligent and more knowledgeable every generation, these stores have to adapt to our evolved habits and needs, I was saying this the day MP3's were first being shared on the internet, the music industry was being ignorant and stubborn thinking that they could stamp it out and and carry on selling CD's at silly prices, now (apparently) on-line music sales have over taken high street music hard media sales, the music industry lost millions if not billions trying to rebel against mp3's for so many years when they should have embraced them as a new commodity in a changing market.

If WHS go, what about all those that have taken on the Post Offices. Unless it becomes a PO Counter at the back of an empty store!!

Never see many people spemding in Waterstones or Borders though and both stores have a huge capital investment in books that are just sitting on shelves for months on end (or used as a free library).

Charity shops are feeling the pinch no doubt with extortionate rents for their premises and higher energy cost overheads.

I reckon DIY might see a bit of downsizing, either B&Q or Homebase though of course the latter is backed by Sainsburys.

Can't see any of the mega-supermarkets going, certainly not Tesco or Sainsbury, maybe one of the smaller chains like Morrisons.

The whole situation is a bit worrying though, fewer outlets means less competition and if the whole "Z" mess is down to the collapse of the distribution partner, what are the managers of the companies or publishers doing to sort out fresh arrangements?

i work for dsgi and its pretty gloomy, peak has been bad for us way down year on year cant see us lasting much longer. Most stores struggling to break even.

Plus side, our shares up somehow climbing. Back to 17p or so.
We rarely get the same as last year in terms of targets...over peak, closed we got was £2k. Not too bad really.

Morrisons won't go, They are on the way up! :p (Morrisons employee speaking)

Had this whole economic downfall happened afew years ago when Morrisons bought out Safeway and was in huge debt, it would be very unlikely that they would survive.

Very unlikely DSGi will actually fold completely. If things get too dire, there'll likely be a takeover by Best Buy - they've had their eyes on using DSG to enter the UK market for a while.

having worked as a manager for jjb for 3 years (not anymore though, engineer now :) )i can safely say they didnt close the stores bcoz of the current finiacial climate..the store closures have been in pipeline for a long time, they are rolling out new look stores and spending a lot on them (see new manchester jjb) they have also recently bought the brand 'Champion' and bought the 'original shoe company'. The reason they are closing the stores is because Dave Whelan sold his part in the company to the boss of sportsworld, Chris Ronnie....who gets paid by the directors board of sportsworld for every jjb he closes down. If you look a the stores closing, they are nearly always ones near a sportsworld and also when you go shopping in JJB, u can even see the same offers tags as sportsworld etc, not to mention the same brands being introduced..everlast anyone heh :)

All this said i hate the company and the way they work, so id be glad if it did go down the pan (not for the staff in the shops) those bosses deserve it.

if anything happens, jjb will turn into sportsworld.

edited because my grammar is useless lol
