Hi, i'm trying to set up my brothers xbox up to use his PC's wireless connection so he can get on to LIVE etc but it's not working. When I bridge the LAN and wireless it disconnects the wireless. After a while it will reconnect but it won't let me on the net.

The bridge is reporting an invalid IP address but even when I enter this manually it won't work. It's set up to use DHCP anyway.

Anyone got any ideas for this?

Also when using a VGA connection to his monitor (22" Digimate) it's looks washed out and rubbish. Should I be using the DVI connection instead?

Thanks.

I have the exact same problem. I can only reconnect to net when i delete the bridge.

Greatly appreciate any assistance.

I could be wrong, but I think ICS sets the IP of the laptop to 192.168.0.1? If thats the case, then you would need to check that the gateway in the wireless settings is set to your routers IP.

I am going to be trying this on my bros xbox when he gets back from holiday so cant really help any more till I can try it myself.

when you have the bridge setup you then have to allocate the wireless bridge an ip address just like a normal network adapter. Make sure that the Ip is in the same range and has the same subnet/default gateway and dns as the original adapter and that should work fine...

I've assigned the bridge an IP an it still won't work. The wireless part of the bridge disconnects when I bridge the connections too, and it won't reconnect.

You also can't use ICS and bridge a connection, but my gateway is 192.168.0.1 anyway.

I've set my 360 up to use the internet via the wireless from the laptop (sod buying the dongle) whilst I'm at my parent's house.

I just plugged the 360 into the laptop's network port, right clicked the wireless connection on the laptop went into properties, then the final tab and told it to allow others to use the connection to access the web, and it's working fine.

No need to bridge at all, that just breaks all of the connections completely.

Just tried that, and it fails when trying to get an IP address in the XBOX tests. Might have to buy the overpriced dongle :(

edit: Think the issue is that theres a conflict somewhere;

my wireless is set for

192.168.0.15
gateway 192.168.0.1

when I enable LAN it says limited or no connectivity unless I specify the IP as 192.168.0.1

As soon as I do that the LAN is fine but the wireless doesn't work. The wireless won't DHCP by it's self when LAN is enabled either! grr

(on brothers account btw)

Ticked both boxes, rebooted the 360 and it connected up fine. :)

Hi,

Does this also work for ethernet cables that plug into special power plugs? Like connect the 360 to the power socket via ethernet, then plug my router into a power socket elsewhere via ethernet??

Ta.

That should just work as if you were plugging it into your router as normal.

I've not tried it though but am tempted by these Ethernet over power things though as they could solve some wireless issues I have.

I can get the ICS box to show up on the 1394 connection, but not on wireless. I could before but must have changed some setting.

Don't bridge the connections, what that does is essentially patch the two connections together so that data flows right through as if it's one cable. Your PC will no longer be on that network.

What you want to do is use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) as InvaderGIR said above. The thing to note is that the other connection (Not the one you are sharing) will default to use the 192.168.0.0/24 network, regardless of what your wireless network is set up as, so you'll need to use the 192.168.0.1-255 range. It also sets up a little DHCP server for you so you can set your 360 to use DHCP and it will get the necessary settings. :)

I gave up on my PC and just used my laptop. Xbox instantly connected with no trouble. I'm just going to buy the wireless adapter though. Easier to manage.

I seem to be getting a lot of frequent disconnects on my PC's wireless connection now though.

Sorted chaps, thanks for the help.

The issue was the routers starting IP address was 192.168.0.1 which conflicted with the LAN IP when you add ICS. So I changed the range to start at 192.168.1.1 and it's sweet as a nut :)

Right. I did this on my old laptop. However the "LAN" shows as limited connectivity..I think it might have after a while set its IP to 192.168.. something or other I think, but this is not in my networks ip pool range so I set it to 10.1.0.25 and as soon as I do that aswell as the subnet to 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway to my routers IP, the internet on the laptop no longer works (xbox live test does not work on the xbox either).

I tried manually setting a IP on the xbox but that didn't work either. Is there something I am doing wrong? Do I need to set my router to the 192.168.x.x range or is there some work around?

not totally true, bridging the connections does not mean that your PC isn't on that network. your PC should continue to work as it did before with regards to the network and internet connectivity, it justs lets the 2nd bridged connection also access the same network.

I used to have my xbox connected to my laptop with a short patch cable, then the laptop's wireless and wired connections bridged with the wireless connected to my router, non of the IP's were set manually and all were getting an IP from the DHCP of my router

ICS isn't always possible if your network's default gateway is 192.168.0.1 because ICS only works if your PC's IP is set to 192.168.0.1 (at least from my experience with it). You could change your routers IP address but if you have a home network like mine with quite a few devices all connectiong with their IP, subnet and DNS all manually entered then it add's the potential for things to stop working :( not to mention it's a ball ache going round and editing the default gateway of each device

Oops, just remembered I hadn't tried it with a crossover cable! Will give that a go later, and perhaps try the bridge as mentioned above, as I would prefer my router's DHCP to assign all IPs.

*edit* Its working fine now, I just bridged the connections as said above, used the xbox 360's patch cable and my router has assigned the "bridge" connection an IP aswell as my xbox 360.
