Blu-Ray disappointment

Starship Troopers, although an early DVD, has a great transfer, but the Bluray makes it look like a VHS in comparison, it really is that big a difference.

Both the Dark Knight and Iron man are prime examples of what Bluray is all about.

Watched it last night and thought it looked amazing. There are a few scenes that look a bit ropey but it generally looked far better than DVD.

dvd will be around for a very long time yet. most people arent interested and dont care for the improvements bluray brings.

I'm not so sure.

The supermarkets are already pushing blu ray sales and now some BR titles are just a few quid more than DVD's.

If this trend continues then DVD's will just be phased out.

Anyone who buys DVD's does care I reckon.

It won't be long before we see BR players in tesco for 49.99 :p

This...there are also FAR too many TVs with terrible out-the-box settings that mean that a lot of people aren't getting the best out of the material they have, as they've just lightly tweaked the settings preset, rather than completely rejigging and trying to get use to the initially large change.

id put a stake on it, easy. its not going to happen.

i still buy dvd's, i dont see what difference that makes. i have friends who dont care. my gf doesnt care. i have friends who go "WOW" at my system and then in the same breath say "but i dont want/need that in my home".

bluray players will have to be cheaper than dvd players and HD tv's will have to be pence for bluray to wipe out dvd. it will not happen any time soon.

They said that about CD and thats dying a death.:p

no it isnt and thats a rubbish comparison. people are choosing digital distrubition over cd medium for ease of conveniance and cost (or lack of, if you arent doing it legally), nothing else. that is nothing like choosing bluray over dvd as bluray is neither easier, nor cheaper.

oh, lol, and CD has been dying a death for YEARS now.

Ok the CD comparison was not a good one :p

BR Dark night is 15.99
BR DVD is 11.99

4 quid more gets you the BR version.

The majority of people who buy DVD's will just pay the extra 4 quid for the BR version imo.

you arent listening. people who dont already own players will almost certainly not have either the screens or the audio hardware to make use of bluray, either because they cant afford it or dont care for it.

you need to buy a new player to play bluray; sorry your £20 dvd player isnt good enough. oh, then you need a new screen because your crt or your little lcd isnt good enough to show any difference between the bluray disc and the dvd edition. oh sound? well you could use your tv's speakers, or even that nice little surround systems youve already got , but really you need to buy a new av amp and set of speakers to take advantage of HD audio....thats only another...£700 or so, minumum...

"erm, i think ill stick with dvd".

You have to convince people its worth forking out for the hardware and as i said, the majority of people(ie NOT US) dont care. if they dont care, it will take a hell of a lot longer to wipe dvd out, if at all. why do you think cd is still around, or analogue terrestrial? dvd is no different. I still buy dvd's because i dont beleive some titles are worth paying the extra for - some films just dont benifit from HD. if the prices were the same then great, ill buy the bluray, but then i already have the £2k + of kit I i feel puts it to good use.

But 99% of people don't have a BR player and "just bought the DVD player" a few years ago. My parents bought a CRT and DVD setup about 5 years ago and have no inclination to change anything until it breaks. They have no interest in film picture or sound quality, they just want to watch them.

This is how nearly everyone in the UK approaches AV equipment. Once DVDs stop being made and BR players are £30 the take up will just about start, but not because of the improvements, because it is forced. Most people have absolutely no interest in picture quality improvement above DVD at the moment. I'd bet the vast majority that have a HDTV have only done so because it looks nicer and is more compact.

The enthusiast market is miniscule.

so people are saying that with the ever dropping price of BR players and PS3's that when peoples DVD players die they wont buy BR because they simply dont care despite the upgrade and negligable price difference?

right but if your dvd player went pop tomorrow you wouldnt go buy a BR player seeing as theyre not really expensive now?
