Hi all,

I used to love playing Age of Empires 1 & 2 and I think it was Caesar 3.

Seeing as Civ 4 is a bargain on Steam - am I likely to enjoy it based on the above? Really tempted to go for it as it's a bargain on Steam at the mo.

Civ 4 is very good but not the same as AoE, if you've no previous Civ knowledge the game can be a lot to take on and you can end up getting destroyed.
However if you've time to give it a chance and half an hour to read up on some tutorial advice you'll get up to speed and start to win.
Civ's a massivly popular series and all those millions can't be wrong.

Give it a try.

Well Civ IV was the first game I played in that genre, and I'm still playing it years later. Its so addicting and I cant wait until they release Civ V.

As for Age of Empires... they're very different games. I actually found Civ IV to be easier to get into but that maybe because its turn based.

Anyway, its deffo worth a try.

I played Civ IV, and didn't really enjoy it.

It seems like Rome Total War but without RTS portion of it, and has a timeline for technology. It is a good game as it does require a fair bit of skill to master, but there wasn't enough action in it for me to enjoy.

Civ4 was a classic, if you get sucked in, it takes over your life.

For the money, it's worth a go.

I can't work out what to do regarding Civ 4. On the one hand, its £10 from jersey. Or £13 on Steam.

On the one hand, Its cheaper to get the CD version. On the other, its CDs. Steam means I can easily download it to any computer easily without carrying them around.
But on the other hand, its a fairly large download...

Help me, OcUK, what should I do?

Technically CD version is only £3-4 as you can sell them on the MM :)

Whereas if you find you don't play it/don't like it, you're stuck with the Steam version.

It's like me with DoW + Expansions...impulse buy and can't stand the things!

Well I played Rome: Total War, and got bored with the RTS part, I ended up just doing turn based attacks. Maybe this might suit me then?

The total war campaign map is as shallow as a puddle compared to Civ4 + beyond the sword. You should get it, theres so much game there for £10-15 they are asking for it now. Best value for money in a game there is atm considering the re-playability you will get from it if you like it.

Ok I'll give it a go. Sold! :)

Worked flawlessly so far, been playing loads of MP versus AI with a few mates. it's all good, a bit annoying when you're waiting ages for someone else's turn though.

We always use hamachi to ignore ports on games, makes it much easier!

I play single player, I find the AI much harder with the expansions (it did say they had AI improvements) even at easier difficulty, maybe I'll play online sometime caus its on steam. I tend to play all the games more if its on steam.

Civ isn't realtime, it's turn based.

I like it in its earlier phases, but towards the end of the game one turn seems to take half an hour, and gets boring with too much micro management.
