Decided i would get a faster response by posting this in GD.

Just wanted to confirm something...i am around 80% certain that LCDs are much more energy efficient and use less power than an old CRT style television...so am i right? And if so, what exactly is the difference? Perhaps in £ could be useful. :)

Edit: My new TV is rated at 130W apparently...want to compare it to an old Alba CRT.

How can you be around 80% sure ? Surely you are sure, or unsure. 80% sure is not fully sure and therefore by implication you are unsure, meaning that you think that CRT's may in fact use LESS power.

Explain yourself sir, lest your confusion cause a terrible mistake.

I don't know the difference but you are right, LCD's are far more energy efficient than CRT's.

My 22" CRT Tagan needed small nuclear reactor to power it.

I'm not sure how much power a CRT consumes after its started up, but i do remember that the initial turning on of the display requires a large spike of power usage which is why CRTs shouldn't be attached to a UPS unless it's powerfull enough to support the CRT turning on without the power disruption being too much if its running on battery power.

That said, i wouldn't suggest an LCD on an UPS either, as they can get quite hot so i assume they are not super efficient themselves.

Yeah, they are more efficient than a tube of the same size...

Trouble is very few people used to have bigger than 28"+ TVs at home... whereas now everyone in a council house has a couple of 32" LCDs in the bedrooms and maybe even 40" plasma in the living room/

IIRC my old 28" TV used about 180 watts when up and on, my Panasonic 32" LCD uses about 120 from memory (I did a comparison when i first got the LCD).

However, you'd probably have to run your LCD for about 40 years to make up for the energy used in its production (the 40 years was an uninformed guesstimate but you get my point).

I'm using a second hand Dell CRT I got off Freecycle which was just going to get trashed otherwise, you need to consider the energy and resources used in production if you're concerned about power usage overall.

my parents live on a council estate in a house they bought does that make them chavs or something your posh git?

i was raised on a council estate as i suspect other members of this forum were and guess what? we have a lovely childhood and a good upbringing.
