Does anyone here tip takeaway delivery drivers?

If they deserve it, yes. For example, because I live in student accommodation Dominos only delivers to a "security lodge" on campus which is at least a 10 minute walk away. However, other companies come right to our flat, buzz in and even walk up the 3 flights of stairs to our kitchen which I think is worth an extra quid or two.

do you guys tip the couriers that come to your house aswell?

Do you pay couriers regularly on delivery? If not then you aren't comparing like for like.

Depends what sort of meal it is, whether I've got any spare cash and whether they've got the food to me on time/correct etc. Normally I'll bung in a couple of quid although it varies with the size of the order.

If the pizza is £12.99 or w/e and I only have a £10 and a £5, then I'll usually just say keep the change. Other than situations like that, I don't really tip.

The thing is I always tip in a restaurant (so long as the service is good), so I was just wondering if maybe I ought to be tipping the delivery driver too.

Gilly, 2 and a half hours!? Thats ridiculous, I hope you told the takeaway and the driver where to shove it!

Many do around Christmas; you know its human nature to be kind and giving.

I usually let them keep the change say its £13 I give them a £10+£5 note I let them have the £2, I would only spend it on crap anyway.

I didn't even let him on the driveway :)

The 'new driver' excuse was given by the delivery place when I first rang (after an hour) to ask where my food was, and again every 10 mins until I lost my patience, made myself something to eat, cancelled ther oder and went to bed.

I don't like getting out of bed for anything. Doing so for a redundant order from a takeaway I'd already lost my patience with isn't high on my list of good things.

He received a piece of my mind, from around 50 yards away.

depends on first impressions really, if there cheerful and polite they'll get a tip....but same bloke delivers here near abouts everytime and he's a funny bloke, meal always comes to about 8.50 so just give him a 10er n tell him to keep change

EDIT: and the chinese is littererly about 2 min walk from my house lol

If the person taking my order says it will be 40 minutes and it is, then I tip. If it's later then no.
You say it like it's you that's empowered. But the restaurant industry has just done an incredible job of engraining it in to people's heads that they should be prepared to hand out extra money, to the extent that it just becomes the done thing through familiarity (see also: Taxis)

Imagine an alternate reality where it was the done thing to tip people on the tills at shops as long as they didn't drop your goods on the floor. You lot would buy in to it ;)

I dont understand how that makes it any difference. Both a courier and a delivery driver are simply delivering products made by other people, to your house. The job is exactly the same.

Tesco just delivered. Should I have tipped the driver?

Perhaps I would, if it was likely to get me slightly better service then I'd certainly consider it. Put it this way, there is a better service culture in Canada (and I believe America although I haven't been) and tipping is the norm there, you have the option not to tip to denote that the service was less than you expected - over here a service charge might be included in the bill which removes your discretion to tip unless you demand that it is removed.

Are you paying on delivery? If you are then we're talking about like for like, if not then we aren't. If paying for takeaway delivery online or over the phone then I would be highly unlikely to tip the driver when they came.

Then that moves it it ever further from the vague service quality aspect.

"Oh, I've got some cash in me 'and. You might as well have some"

But I don't think "not screwing up" is worth a special pat on the back.

why would you tip a delivery driver parcels etc if your waiting 9-5 for it? if your told 30 mins and its on time and there friendly usualy i tip if i got the cash to spare i use to make more in tips than i did in actual wage crap drivers who werent friendly use to make peanuts just depends on the attitutude of the driver.

Why does the method of payment make such a difference? Why does the fact he adds 10 seconds to his delivery by collecting cash on behalf of his employer mean he is worthy of a tip yet the guy from DHL is not?

Do you tip your till operator in McDonalds? You pay them..

I always give a tip, even if its just 50p or something. They need something to make up for the fact that they're a takeaway delivery boy :p
