HD4670 - Very Poor Performance

I used to get 40/50+ fps on high at 1280-x1024. I have a skt. 939 3000+, 1GB DDR RAM and a much worse card (6600GT) ... well had, it's borked ... I plan on getting a HD4670 soon.

CPU isn't the fastest but I'd be suprised if it was that thats holding you back - 1gig of RAM is probably somewhat to blame but not the whole story. Even my old P4 3gig (HT+800FSB) with a 6800 Ultra managed 60-70fps in CSS at 1280x1024 with 2x AA 16x AF on mostly high settings... same again with COD4 tho on slightly lower settings.

nothing in it at all so wouldn't worry

Technically PCI-E 2.0 has twice the bandwidth of PCI-E, but current graphic cards don't yet use all the bandwidth of PCI-E yet, unless you have them in SLI, and that's the bandwidth of the bus not the individual slots! So since it's backwards compatible, most new mobos are starting to support PCI-E 2.0, but it's not going to be a concern for a while.:)

with that setup you should still get reasonable fps on COD4..at least 45fps..something is a miss somewhere...I had a P4 2.8ghz skt 478 with 1 gig pc3200 and an X800XT (AGP) running fine with 4x AA and 8x AF in my youngest's system.

Something is definitely up here. Even though the cpu and ram are weak by modern standards I've played CSS on a far lower spec machine without any problems.
I used to get 30-40fps with a AMD 2100+, 512mb of ram and a 9500pro in 1024x768.

What drivers are you running? Is your processor throttling due to heat perhaps? Also it might be worth checking to see if anything is running in the background using up ram and cpu.

how long ago was that? css updates have made performance significantly worse over the years

I used to run CSS at 1680x1050 with a Pentium D 2.8ghz, 1gb ram and a x1650 pro 256mb.. And that was at everything high I'm sure. This was only 6 months ago too.

I'm over my dads for the weekend now but will look when i get home, i am using the latest catalsyt drivers and i dont think that my cpu is overheating will check in cpuz when i get home though. as for css i am running the latest updated version. i think the fact that the ram is only ddr @ 200mhz is the main problem. its strange though because when i turn all the settings right down in the game i get a lower fps than when i turn then up high. this was the same with my previous card (6600GT).

any ideas???

im sure it's not cpu i've just gived my brother a at 3850 256 mb which is very similiar to 4670 at performance and he has the same cpu and 2gb ddr2 ram :) now he played css at 14x9 all maxed out with 8aa 80+fps all the time :) something else is wrong with your system :) ram maybe? but cant be that bad tbh..

The card itself is capable of >125 fps in cs: source on highest settings so there is either a hardware conflict or the cpu is holding you back.
Luckily a e5200, EP31 DS3L and 4 gig of ddr2 is going to set you back all of 170 quid or less :)
Huge upgrade, one ive just made :)
Reformat windows and install clean :)

Possibly a silly question, but are you running native res on your monitor (presuming your using a TFT here)
I had a problem where a rig performed far worse at lower res presumably because the image was being downscaled. It never made sense, but I knocked it back up to full res and the game was fine again.

Years ago, hadn't realised they had dropped performance over the years.

yeh the ram is only running at 200Mhz so im guessing thats the issue, but when i looked at the mobo box i see that it runs 5300 ddr2, could i use 6400 in these slots? just that when i eventually do upgrade the mobo i will want to get at least 800mhz out of the ram.

ok cool, ill buy 4gb of ram as soon as i can, will xp sp3 x86 run with 4gb of ram or will i need to get 64bit??

btw. The Deuce - where do you live in durham, im near pity me atm with my dad

You'll have about 3.5gig running 32bit XP. Not ideal, but not the end of the world and still a huge boost over a single gig :)
If your tight on money I'd stick with the OS you have at the minute, the money would be better saved towards a faster cpu to go with your 3.5 gig of ram xD

:)

ok cheers, it stinks that 16 year olds can't buy online!! i have to wait for my parents to be bothered to buy me it!! shame pc world and currys are so expensive....
